How to make a Minecraft server in 2026 depends first on your edition and how much technical work you want to manage. Use Realms for the easiest private world, self-host Java for free and flexible hosting, Bedrock Dedicated Server for Bedrock devices, or paid hosting for a 24/7 server without home-network configuration.

Java and Bedrock are separate server ecosystems by default. Before downloading anything, confirm whether your players use Java Edition on PC, Bedrock Edition on Windows, consoles, phones, tablets, or Chromebook, and decide whether the server must remain online when your computer is off.

Key takeaways

  • Self-hosted Java Edition is the most flexible free option, but the host computer, internet connection, and server process must remain available.
  • Bedrock Dedicated Server officially supports Windows and Ubuntu Linux, requires at least 4 GB of RAM, and is not officially available for macOS.
  • Java and Bedrock players cannot normally join the same server without advanced compatibility software.
  • Realms is the simplest official option: the August 16, 2026 U.S. pricing check lists Bedrock Realms at $3.99 per month, Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99, and Java Realms at $7.99.
  • Port forwarding is not always possible because ISP CGNAT, multiple routers, or firewall rules can block inbound connections.
  • Keep online-mode=true, enable a whitelist for private servers, stop the server with stop, and maintain dated world backups.

Which Minecraft server method should you choose?

The best Minecraft server method depends on edition, availability, customization, and your willingness to administer a computer or server.

Method Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Self-hosted Java A few Java players and occasional sessions No hosting subscription, full file and configuration control Requires Java, firewall and router configuration; the computer must stay online
Bedrock Dedicated Server Bedrock players on supported devices Official self-hosting for Windows and Ubuntu Linux Separate from Java; platform multiplayer and custom-server access vary
Minecraft Realms Small private groups that value convenience Official cloud hosting, invitations, backups, and always-online availability Monthly fee, player limits, same-edition restriction, less server control
Managed Minecraft host 24/7 servers, plugins, mods, or no home port forwarding Control panel, support, backups, and provider-managed network infrastructure Recurring cost, resource limits, provider-dependent performance and policies
VPS or dedicated server Experienced Linux administrators and larger custom deployments More infrastructure control and room for multiple services You manage the operating system, firewall, updates, backups, security, and Minecraft software

Quick decision: choose Realms if convenience matters most, self-hosted Java if you want a free and flexible private server, Bedrock Dedicated Server if all players use Bedrock, managed hosting if you need 24/7 availability without home networking, and a VPS or dedicated machine only if you are comfortable administering Linux.

What is the difference between Java and Bedrock servers?

Java Edition servers serve Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux PCs, while Bedrock servers serve Bedrock devices such as Windows, consoles, phones, tablets, and Chromebook where platform rules allow multiplayer.

Edition Typical devices Official self-hosted software Who can join
Java Edition Windows, macOS, Linux PCs Official Java server JAR Java Edition clients using a compatible version
Bedrock Edition Windows, consoles, phones, tablets, Chromebook Bedrock Dedicated Server for supported Windows and Ubuntu versions Bedrock clients, subject to device and platform online-service requirements
Realms Java or Bedrock Mojang-hosted Realm for the selected edition Players using the same edition as the Realm

Minecraft Java and Bedrock are not natively interchangeable. A Java client normally cannot join a Bedrock server, and a Bedrock client normally cannot join a Java server. Compatibility proxies and bridging software exist, but those setups are advanced, can have limitations, and are outside the beginner path. Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison explains the edition distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Windows Minecraft purchase bundle can include both editions, but a player still has to launch the edition that matches the server. A purchase does not automatically make a Java client compatible with a Bedrock server.

What do you need before making a Minecraft server?

For a self-hosted server, prepare Minecraft Java Edition or Bedrock Edition as appropriate, a supported computer, administrator access, compatible server software, available memory, stable internet, and a backup plan.

  • Choose the exact Minecraft release before downloading server software. Clients, worlds, mods, plugins, and Java requirements can be version-specific.
  • Use a separate server folder rather than the normal .minecraft game-data folder.
  • Leave memory available for the operating system and the game; allocating all system RAM to the server can make the computer unstable.
  • Get permission from the network owner before changing firewall or router settings.
  • Plan how you will back up the world before inviting players.

The official Minecraft Java server download page provides the server file and notes that Windows users may need to configure Java for command-line use.

How do you make a Java Edition server on Windows?

The following vanilla Java procedure creates a basic private server on Windows. The exact Java runtime and available configuration properties depend on the Minecraft release you select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Create a dedicated server folder

Create a folder such as:

C:MinecraftServer

Keeping the JAR, configuration, logs, world, scripts, and backups together makes upgrades and recovery safer.

2. Download and name the official server file

Open the official Java server download page, select the release that your players will use, and download the server JAR. Renaming the downloaded file to server.jar is optional but makes commands easier:

server.jar

If you keep the original filename, use that exact filename in every launch command. Do not automatically choose the newest download if your players, mods, plugins, or world require another release.

3. Check whether Java works

Open Command Prompt in C:MinecraftServer and run:

java -version

If Windows says that java is not recognized, install a Java runtime compatible with the target Minecraft server release and make sure the Java executable is available on the system PATH. Java requirements change between Minecraft releases; a third-party compatibility reference lists Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for 26.1 and newer according to its March 31, 2026 update, but the exact target release should be checked before installation. Treat that third-party Java compatibility table as a reference, not as a substitute for the selected server release’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Start the server once

Run this illustrative command from the server folder:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

The official Minecraft launch example uses java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar minecraft_server.<version>.jar nogui. The nogui argument suppresses the graphical interface; omitting nogui launches the graphical interface instead. The illustrative 2 GB initial and 4 GB maximum allocation is not a universal hardware recommendation.

  • -Xms2G sets the initial Java heap size.
  • -Xmx4G sets the maximum Java heap size.
  • The operating system and Minecraft client also need memory.
  • Additional RAM cannot by itself fix a weak CPU, slow storage, overloaded simulation distance, or inadequate upload bandwidth.

The first run normally creates files including eula.txt, server.properties, a world folder, and a logs folder.

5. Accept the EULA only if you agree

If the server stops and reports that the EULA must be accepted, open eula.txt, read the agreement, and change:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Only make that change after agreeing to the terms. Mojang’s Minecraft EULA permits installing the Java server version and hosting online play while imposing rules about distribution, branding, commercialization, and access.

6. Start the server again

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

For repeat launches, create start.bat in the same folder:

@echo off
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
pause

The pause command leaves the window open after a crash so you can read the error. For a production server, a service manager or scheduled task is more reliable than leaving a desktop script unattended.

7. Configure server.properties safely

Stop the server with stop before editing server.properties. A small private survival server might use settings like these, provided the selected version supports the property names:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
motd=My Minecraft Server
gamemode=survival
difficulty=normal
max-players=10
online-mode=true
white-list=true
pvp=true
view-distance=10
simulation-distance=8
server-port=25565

Keep online-mode=true for a normal server. Disabling authentication can permit impersonation and create serious security problems. Keep white-list=true for a private group, then add only invited players.

Property names and behavior can change. Compare your generated file with the options supported by your selected release instead of blindly pasting an old configuration.

Useful console commands include:

whitelist on
whitelist add PlayerName
whitelist remove PlayerName
op PlayerName
deop PlayerName
save-all
stop

Give operator privileges only to people you trust. Use save-all before maintenance and stop rather than closing the terminal or killing Java, because a clean stop gives the server an opportunity to save the world.

8. Allow Java through the Windows firewall

Allow Java or the server process through Windows Defender Firewall when Windows prompts you. If creating a manual rule, restrict it to the server’s required port and the appropriate network profile where practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A local firewall and router port forwarding solve different problems: the firewall permits traffic on the host computer, while router NAT forwarding directs internet traffic to that computer. ISP restrictions such as CGNAT can prevent inbound connections even when both settings are correct.

9. Forward the Java port on your router

Java’s conventional default is TCP port 25565, but the actual value is controlled by server-port. Create a router rule resembling this:

Router field Example
External port 25565
Internal port 25565
Protocol TCP
Destination The host computer’s local IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.25

Reserve the host computer’s local address in the router’s DHCP settings or configure a stable local address. Without a stable address, the router may forward to the wrong device after a reboot. Do not publish a private address such as 192.168.1.25; players on the same home network can use it, but outside players need the public address or a hostname.

10. Connect to the Java server

Player location Address to try
The same computer localhost
The same home network The host’s private IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.25
Outside the home The home’s public IP address, such as 203.0.113.25
Outside the home using a non-default port 203.0.113.25:25566

Players normally omit the port when the server uses default port 25565. Share a public address privately with invited players rather than posting it unnecessarily.

How do you make a Java server on macOS or Linux?

macOS and Linux can run the official Java server software, but the official Bedrock Dedicated Server download does not support macOS and officially supports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux.

A basic Java setup on macOS or Linux is:

mkdir -p ~/minecraft-server
cd ~/minecraft-server
java -version
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

On Linux, install a Java runtime appropriate for the target release, use file permissions that prevent unrelated users from modifying the server, and configure the host firewall as well as any router. Tools such as screen or tmux can keep a console session available after disconnecting from SSH. A system service is preferable for an unattended VPS, but service files should be written for the selected Linux distribution and Java path rather than copied blindly.

How do you make a Bedrock Dedicated Server?

Use Mojang’s separate Bedrock Dedicated Server download for Bedrock players. The official requirements list Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later; at least 4 GB of RAM; broadband internet; and available disk space that can grow with server data. Other Linux distributions are not officially supported, and the official Bedrock server software is not available for macOS.

Follow this Bedrock path:

  1. Download the live or preview Bedrock Dedicated Server for Windows or Ubuntu from the official Bedrock server page.
  2. Extract the files into a dedicated folder.
  3. Read the included “How to use the dedicated server” documentation.
  4. Run the supplied Windows executable or Linux startup command.
  5. Accept the EULA as directed by the included files.
  6. Configure the generated server settings.
  7. Allow the required UDP port through the operating-system firewall.
  8. Forward the port on the router if players are connecting from the internet.
  9. Add the server through the Bedrock multiplayer or server interface where that platform supports custom servers.

Bedrock’s conventional default is UDP port 19132, but verify the generated configuration and current documentation before forwarding a port. Console access to custom Bedrock servers can vary by platform, and console players may also need the relevant platform’s online multiplayer subscription. Bedrock add-ons and behavior/resource packs are not interchangeable with Java mods, and Java plugins such as Paper plugins do not run on Bedrock Dedicated Server.

Is Minecraft Realms worth using instead?

Realms is the easiest official choice for a small, persistent private world because Mojang hosts the server, handles availability and backups, and lets invited friends play while the owner is offline.

Plan U.S. price checked August 16, 2026 Simultaneous players
Bedrock Realms $3.99/month Owner plus 2
Bedrock Realms Plus $7.99/month Owner plus 10
Java Realms $7.99/month Up to 10

These are U.S. prices shown on the official Minecraft Realms page during the stated check. Prices, taxes, trials, and billing terms can vary by country and change over time.

Realms provides three persistent world slots and cloud storage, but only one world is playable at a time. According to the official Realms information, an expired Realm world remains downloadable for 18 months after subscription expiry. Friends do not need their own Realms subscription to join an invited Realm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Realms when the group is small, players use the same edition, the world should be online when the owner is offline, and convenience matters more than customization. Choose another method when you need a public community server, extensive plugins or mod loaders, full file-system access, custom performance tuning, or more players than the plan supports.

Should you rent third-party Minecraft hosting?

Managed Minecraft hosting is useful when you need 24/7 availability, cannot configure port forwarding, want a control panel, or plan to run plugins, mods, or modpacks.

During the August 16, 2026 commercial check, BisectHosting advertised monthly Minecraft plans beginning at $3.00 per GB, including example plans of 2 GB for $5.99, 4 GB for $11.99, 6 GB for $17.99, 8 GB for $23.99, and 12 GB for $35.99. BisectHosting also advertised locations, instant setup, DDoS protection, automated modpack installation, backups, a control panel, and support. Those are provider claims, not independent performance tests.

PebbleHost advertised budget plans from $1 per GB, an example 6 GB Premium configuration at $13.50 per month, and a 72-hour money-back policy during the same check. The provider also advertised custom JAR support, scheduled tasks, backups, FTP access, a free subdomain, and multiple locations. Budget and Premium tiers can use different hardware, so RAM alone is not a fair performance comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, compare CPU performance and allocation, RAM, storage, data-center location, latency, backups, DDoS protection, mod and plugin support, file access, support quality, refund terms, renewal pricing, player-slot limits, and Java or Bedrock support. A paid host is not automatically faster or safer than home hosting; the value is the workload transferred to the provider, such as uptime, network administration, backups, and support.

What are the differences between vanilla, Paper, and modded Java servers?

Vanilla is the best starting point because it uses the official server software and creates the simplest baseline for compatibility and troubleshooting.

Server type Use it for Main cost or risk
Vanilla Standard survival and first-time administration Fewer administrative and gameplay extensions
Paper or similar optimized software Plugins, administrative tools, and performance-focused configuration Unofficial software, plugin compatibility issues, and possible behavior changes
Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or other modded software Modpacks and new mechanics Matching client, loader, mod, configuration, and Java versions; often higher resource demands

Keep the first server vanilla. Move to Paper when you have a specific plugin requirement, and move to a mod loader when the group has selected a compatible modpack. Back up the world before installing software or changing versions, and expect every player in a modded setup to use the required matching files.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

There is no reliable universal RAM-per-player formula. Minecraft resource use depends on concurrent players, view and simulation distance, entities and farms, redstone, exploration, plugins, datapacks, mods, CPU performance, storage latency, upload speed, backups, and map-rendering tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A small vanilla server can begin with a modest allocation if the host retains memory for the operating system and game. Size a modded server around the specific modpack’s requirements rather than a generic player count. For larger communities, monitor performance and test changes in stages. Lowering view distance and simulation distance can reduce load but changes gameplay, while allocating unnecessarily high RAM can increase garbage-collection pauses.

How do you keep a Minecraft server private and safe?

  • Keep online-mode=true.
  • Enable the whitelist and add only invited players.
  • Give operator privileges only to trusted administrators.
  • Download server JARs, plugins, mods, and scripts only from sources you can evaluate.
  • Back up the world before installing software or changing versions.
  • Update the operating system and server software deliberately rather than automatically updating a working world.
  • Do not expose remote administration panels directly to the internet without authentication and firewall controls.
  • Use a separate machine or user account when practical, and do not run arbitrary downloaded tools as administrator unless necessary.
  • Check plugin permissions and dependencies.
  • For public servers, prepare moderation and grief-recovery procedures.

If you operate a public or monetized server, read Mojang’s current Minecraft Usage Guidelines, EULA, Microsoft Services Agreement, and relevant platform rules. Policy guidance is not legal advice; the guidelines address paid access, disclosures, advertising, monetization, branding, and avoiding the impression that a server is official or endorsed.

How should you back up, update, and stop the server?

Use a clean shutdown and keep multiple dated copies of the world. Enter save-all, wait for the save to finish, then enter stop. Copy the world and relevant configuration to storage separate from the server machine, and periodically test that a backup can actually be restored.

Before changing Minecraft versions, Java versions, server software, plugins, mods, or datapacks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the exact current server version and installed extensions.
  2. Stop the server cleanly.
  3. Create and label a complete backup.
  4. Test the update on a copy where practical.
  5. Keep the previous server files and backup until the new version is proven stable.
  6. Tell players which client version to launch.

Never overwrite the only copy of a world. If a world rolls back or becomes corrupted, stop the server, preserve the damaged copy for diagnosis, and restore the latest known-good backup.

How do you troubleshoot a Minecraft server?

Java is not recognized

Run where java and java -version. Java may not be installed, PATH may be missing, the terminal may have been opened before installation, or multiple Java versions may conflict. Restart Command Prompt after installation and verify that the runtime matches the server release.

Failed to bind to port

Another server or duplicate Java process may already use the port, or the configured port may be invalid or unavailable. Stop duplicate processes, choose another server-port if necessary, and update the firewall and router rules to match.

Localhost works but friends cannot connect

Check the connection in this order:

  1. Confirm that the server works on the host using localhost.
  2. Test from another device on the same LAN.
  3. Confirm that the host’s local IP has not changed.
  4. Confirm the computer firewall rule.
  5. Confirm the router’s forwarding protocol, port, and destination.
  6. Test from an external network using the correct public IP.
  7. Check for ISP CGNAT, blocked inbound connections, or multiple NAT layers.
  8. If inbound hosting is impossible, use Realms, managed hosting, or a reputable tunnel/VPN solution.

Players see outdated client or outdated server

The client and server versions may differ, a snapshot or preview may have been selected, a modded client may be connecting to vanilla software, or the server may have updated while a player did not. Record the exact server version and have every player use the matching edition and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server runs but lags

Check CPU saturation, RAM pressure and garbage collection, view and simulation distance, entity and redstone load, plugins, mods, datapacks, storage performance, upload capacity, and backup or map-rendering jobs. Do not add RAM before identifying the bottleneck.

The world is corrupted or rolled back

Enter stop, preserve the current files, and restore the most recent known-good backup. Keep multiple dated backups and test restoration periodically.

Can you make a Minecraft server for free?

Yes. The official server software can be run on hardware you already own, but a “free” self-hosted server may still consume electricity, hardware capacity, bandwidth, storage, backups, and your time. Realms and managed hosts add recurring cost in exchange for convenience, availability, and administration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Java and Bedrock players play together on one Minecraft server?

Java and Bedrock players cannot normally join the same Minecraft server because the editions use separate server ecosystems. Advanced proxy or compatibility software can bridge some setups, but compatibility and maintenance limitations make that unsuitable as the beginner path.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I host a Minecraft server from a phone or console?

The official self-hosted server paths in this guide are Java server software for computers or rented machines and Bedrock Dedicated Server for supported Windows and Ubuntu systems. Phones and consoles can play Bedrock, but they are not the normal host platforms for the official dedicated-server software, and console access to custom servers varies by platform.

Does the host computer need to stay on?

A home-hosted Minecraft server is available only while the host computer, server process, and internet connection remain available. Realms and managed hosting are better choices when friends need to play while the owner’s computer is off.

What port does a Minecraft server use?

Java commonly uses TCP port 25565 and Bedrock commonly uses UDP port 19132, but the actual port comes from the selected server’s configuration. Verify the configured port before changing firewall or router rules.

Can I host a Minecraft server behind CGNAT?

Traditional port forwarding may not work behind ISP CGNAT because inbound internet traffic cannot reach the home router directly. Confirm local connectivity and router settings first, then use Realms, managed hosting, or a reputable tunnel or VPN solution if the ISP does not provide reachable inbound access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most small groups, choose the same-edition option that matches the players: Realms for the least administration, self-hosted Java for free flexibility, Bedrock Dedicated Server for supported Bedrock hosting, and managed hosting for 24/7 access or mod/plugin support. Whichever method you choose, match versions, keep authentication enabled, whitelist private servers, stop cleanly, and maintain tested backups.
