WhatsApp is an internet-based messaging and calling app. This guide explains what it does, how to install and use it, and how to get more from chats, calls, groups, Status, WhatsApp Web, privacy controls, backups, and security features.
WhatsApp is a free internet-based messaging and calling app. You can use it to send messages and voice notes, make voice and video calls, share photos and documents, create groups, post Status updates, and use WhatsApp Web or desktop apps. Standard chats and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption by default, but your phone, backups, linked devices, and recipients still need protection.
What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is a communications service owned by Meta. It uses Wi-Fi or mobile data instead of traditional SMS or cellular calling, so your carrier may charge for data usage. The app is available for Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and supported web browsers.
WhatsApp accounts are traditionally registered with a phone number. WhatsApp is most useful when the people you want to contact already use the service.
#1 Best Overall
What can you do with WhatsApp?
- Chat: Send text, emoji, GIFs, stickers, voice messages, contacts, locations, photos, videos, and documents.
- Call: Make one-to-one or group voice and video calls over the internet.
- Organize conversations: Search chats, pin important conversations, archive chats, star messages, and manage media storage.
- Share temporary updates: Publish photos, videos, text, or voice updates to Status.
- Communicate at scale: Use groups, Communities, Channels, and broadcast features where they are available for your account and region.
- Run a business: Use WhatsApp Business for a business profile, customer conversations, catalogs, and saved or automated replies.
What you need to use WhatsApp
- A compatible Android phone or iPhone.
- An active phone number that can receive an SMS or voice call for verification.
- An internet connection. Mobile calls and media transfers can consume significant data.
- Enough phone storage for the app and downloaded media.
- A current version downloaded from the official WhatsApp download page or your device’s official app store.
Avoid unofficial modified versions of WhatsApp. They can expose your account, stop working unexpectedly, and create security and support problems.
How to install and set up WhatsApp
- Install WhatsApp from the official source.
- Open the app and accept the displayed terms.
- Enter your phone number with the correct country code.
- Enter the six-digit registration code sent by SMS, or request a voice call if WhatsApp offers that option.
- Set your profile name and optionally add a profile picture.
- Restore a backup if WhatsApp offers one and you want your previous chats back.
- Review privacy, notification, media-download, and backup settings.
Never give your registration code to another person. If registration fails, check the country code, confirm that the SIM can receive messages or calls, and avoid repeatedly requesting new codes because WhatsApp may impose a waiting period.
How to send a message
- Open WhatsApp and select the new-chat button.
- Choose a contact who uses WhatsApp, or enter a number in international format.
- Type your message and select Send.
- For a voice message, press and hold the microphone button. On many versions, you can swipe upward to lock the recording and review or cancel it before sending.
A single gray check generally means the message was sent. Two gray checks generally mean it was delivered. Two blue checks usually mean it was read when read receipts are enabled. Privacy settings, group chats, connection issues, linked devices, and blocking can affect how these indicators behave.
Replies, reactions, search, and chat organization
Long-press a message on a phone or right-click it on a computer to find actions such as reply, forward, star, copy, delete, and reaction. Replying quotes the original message, which is useful in busy group chats.
Use Search to find words, links, people, photos, videos, documents, or other media. In a chat, open the contact or group information page to browse shared media.
Star messages that you need to find again. Archive chats to remove them from the main list without deleting them. Pin important chats where the feature is available, but keep the number of pinned chats small enough that the feature remains useful.
How to make WhatsApp voice and video calls
- Open an individual chat.
- Select the phone icon for a voice call or the camera icon for a video call.
- For a group call, use the call controls in a group or add participants after starting a call.
- Allow microphone and camera permissions only when needed.
WhatsApp calls use internet data rather than ordinary cellular minutes. If call quality is poor, move closer to your Wi-Fi router, stop large downloads, switch networks, or turn video off. A mobile carrier may charge for data, particularly when roaming.

How to create and manage a WhatsApp group
- Select New chat, then New group.
- Choose participants and enter a group subject.
- Optionally add a group icon.
- Open group information to manage participants, permissions, notifications, media visibility, and disappearing-message settings.
Depending on the group settings, administrators can control who may send messages, edit group information, add participants, or approve new members. Do not post passwords, access codes, private documents, or another person’s personal information in a group. Members may be able to save, forward, photograph, or otherwise redistribute it.
A Community groups related WhatsApp groups under one structure. A Channel is designed mainly for one-to-many updates rather than ordinary back-and-forth conversation. Availability and exact controls vary by country and account.
How to share photos, videos, documents, locations, and contacts
Open a chat, select the attachment menu, and choose the item to share. Before selecting Send:
- Confirm the recipient, especially in a group.
- Use a document attachment when preserving the original file matters.
- Review live-location sharing and stop it when it is no longer needed.
- Check images for faces, addresses, computer screens, or other information you did not intend to share.
- Remember that the recipient can copy or forward what you send.
Automatic media download is convenient but can use data and fill storage. In Settings > Storage and data, set separate download preferences for mobile data, Wi-Fi, and roaming. Turn off automatic saving to your phone’s photo library if you do not want every received image copied there.

Status, disappearing messages, and view-once media
Status
Status lets you post text, photos, videos, GIFs, or voice updates that are intended to be temporary. Use the Status audience controls to choose who can see them. Viewers may still capture or record what appears on their screen.
Disappearing messages
Disappearing messages automatically remove new messages after the selected duration. WhatsApp has offered durations including 24 hours, seven days, and 90 days, though the options shown can change with app updates. The feature reduces the amount of history retained in a chat; it does not guarantee that a message cannot be saved, forwarded, quoted, photographed, included in a backup, or copied before it expires. WhatsApp explains the feature and its limitations in its official announcement.
View-once media
View-once photos and videos are intended for one viewing, and WhatsApp has added screenshot-blocking protections for some view-once content. They are not a substitute for trust or device security: recipients can still use another device to capture the screen, and platform behavior may change. Send only content you are comfortable sharing with that recipient.

WhatsApp privacy and security settings
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, so the content is designed to be readable only by the participants. Encryption does not protect a compromised phone, an exposed registration code, an unsafe linked computer, a malicious recipient, or every copy created outside the chat.
Open Settings > Privacy and review:
- Last seen and online: Choose who can see when you were last active and whether your online presence is visible.
- Profile photo, About, and Status: Limit visibility to everyone, contacts, selected contacts, or nobody according to the controls shown.
- Read receipts: Turn them off if you do not want to share read status. Group chats and some features may behave differently.
- Groups: Restrict who can add you to groups. If someone cannot add you directly, WhatsApp may send an invitation instead.
- Calls: Use options such as silencing calls from unknown numbers when available.
- Live location: Check active location shares and stop old ones.
Then open Settings > Account > Two-step verification and create a PIN. Add an email address only if you can protect that email account. The PIN is separate from the six-digit registration code; never disclose either one.
Enable WhatsApp’s app lock or your phone’s screen lock and keep the operating system, WhatsApp, browser, and desktop app updated. For current account-recovery and safety instructions, use the WhatsApp Help Center.
Backups: the important privacy trade-off
WhatsApp chat backups are separate from the live message-encryption experience. They are stored copies associated with your phone platform account, such as Google Drive or iCloud, and require access to the correct phone number and platform account during restoration.
Open Settings > Chats > Chat backup and check:
- When the last backup completed.
- Which Google or Apple account is being used.
- Whether videos are included.
- Whether end-to-end encrypted backup is enabled.
WhatsApp’s optional end-to-end encrypted backup can be protected with a password or a 64-digit encryption key. WhatsApp says it and the backup provider cannot read an encrypted backup or access the key needed to unlock it; that also means losing the password or key can prevent recovery. See Meta’s technical explanation of encrypted backups.
Before changing phones, make a current backup, confirm that it completed, keep access to the same phone number and platform account, and do not erase the old phone until the new phone has restored the chats and media you need.
How to use WhatsApp on a computer

- Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app and display its QR code.
- On your phone, open Settings > Linked devices.
- Select Link a device, authenticate if requested, and scan the QR code.
- Review the linked-device list and remove computers you no longer recognize or use.
WhatsApp supports using a phone with multiple companion devices; its engineering documentation describes up to four additional non-phone devices. Linked devices can be used independently after setup, but they create another place where your account and chat history may be accessible. Do not scan a QR code sent by a stranger or displayed on an untrusted website.
On a shared computer, log out afterward and avoid leaving sensitive media downloaded locally.

Feature availability is being rolled out by country, operating system, and account. Recent official announcements include:
- Username reservations: WhatsApp began allowing users to reserve optional usernames before the feature’s broader launch. When available, go to Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp says usernames are intended to let you connect with new people without immediately revealing your phone number, but rollout is gradual and there is no directory to browse. See the Meta announcement.
- Cross-platform chat transfer: WhatsApp announced support for moving chat history from iOS to Android, in addition to transfers within the same platform. Follow the transfer instructions shown during setup and verify the result before wiping the old phone.
- Two accounts on iPhone: WhatsApp announced support for two accounts on one iPhone, matching an existing Android capability. Each account needs its own phone number, and the option may not yet appear for everyone.
- Chat storage management: In supported versions, open a chat’s information page and select Manage Storage to remove large media files while keeping the conversation itself. These and other changes are summarized in WhatsApp’s March 2026 update.
WhatsApp tips and tricks that are genuinely useful
- Format messages: Use the formatting menu or WhatsApp’s supported syntax for bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace.
- Search with a distinctive word: Then narrow by date or media type when those filters appear.
- Manage storage from inside a chat: Delete large or duplicated media without deleting the entire conversation when the option is available.
- Mute busy chats: Mute a group or individual chat instead of leaving it when you still need the history.
- Protect notification previews: Lock-screen previews can expose one-time codes, addresses, and private messages.
- Reduce mobile-data use: Disable automatic downloads over cellular data and enable lower-data calling if your version provides it.
- Use view-once media cautiously: It reduces ordinary chat persistence but does not eliminate the risk of copying.
- Separate work and personal messages: Use WhatsApp Business or a second account if your phone and version support it.
- Use polls or events in groups: They can replace long message threads, but confirm important decisions in a normal message or another record.
- Check linked devices regularly: This is one of the fastest ways to find an unauthorized WhatsApp Web or desktop session.
Common WhatsApp problems and fixes
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Messages are stuck or calls fail | Test another website, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, disable a problematic VPN, update WhatsApp, check the phone’s date and time, and confirm that storage is not full. |
| A contact cannot be found | Confirm the number includes the country code, refresh contacts if offered, and verify that the person uses WhatsApp on that number. |
| The registration code does not arrive | Check cellular service, SMS blocking, voicemail, the number format, and the code timer. Do not guess codes or repeatedly request new ones. |
| Notifications do not appear | Check WhatsApp notification permissions, Focus or Do Not Disturb, battery restrictions, background-data limits, muted chats, and notification-channel settings. |
| Photos or videos will not download | Check storage, app permissions, internet access, automatic-download rules, and whether the media has expired or been removed. |
| WhatsApp Web shows an unfamiliar computer | Open Settings > Linked devices, remove the session, enable two-step verification, and warn contacts if suspicious messages were sent. |
| You changed phones | Use a current backup or WhatsApp’s direct chat-transfer feature, keep the same number where required, restore during setup, and verify important chats before wiping the old device. |
WhatsApp scams and account-takeover attempts
Many WhatsApp attacks rely on social engineering. Someone may ask for your six-digit registration code, two-step PIN, money, gift cards, or a QR-code scan. The request may appear to come from a friend whose account has already been compromised.
- Never share an SMS registration code or two-step PIN.
- Verify urgent money requests through a separate channel and a known number.
- Be cautious with fake support accounts, prize messages, job offers, investment pitches, and links demanding immediate action.
- Do not scan an unexpected WhatsApp Web QR code.
- Report and block suspicious accounts using WhatsApp’s in-app controls.
If you lose access, try registering your phone number again on your own device. Contact friends through another channel so they ignore unusual messages, review Linked devices and two-step verification, and use the official Help Center rather than a third-party “recovery” service.
WhatsApp compared with SMS, iMessage, and Telegram
| WhatsApp is a good fit when… | Another option may be better when… |
|---|---|
| Your contacts already use it, you need cross-platform group chats, or you want messaging and internet calls in one app. | Your audience does not use WhatsApp, your organization requires an approved platform, or you need email, SMS, or a dedicated collaboration tool. |
| You want a familiar phone-number-based identity and simple media sharing. | You want to minimize phone-number exposure, need a different account model, or require specialized enterprise retention and administration controls. |
No messaging app removes the human risks of sending information to another person. Choose based on who you need to reach, the platform rules that apply to your work, how backups are managed, and what you need to retain or delete.
