Level Lock Plus remains one of the most elegant Apple Home Key locks, but it is not the best smart lock for everyone. The current Matter-over-Thread version is a strong buy for design-conscious Apple households with a compatible hub; buyers needing an included keypad, fingerprint access, or the lowest total cost should choose another lock.
The important distinction is between the original Level Lock+ and the current Matter model. The original lock launched in 2022 and was the subject of a widely read 9to5Mac long-term review published May 12, 2023. Level introduced Level Lock+ (Matter) on November 14, 2024. Level now appears to market the current $249 Matter-capable product simply as Level Lock, so check the model and connectivity description carefully before ordering.
Key takeaways
- Level Lock+ is still a leading choice for Apple Home Key, especially when discreet hardware matters more than having every access method built in.
- The current Matter version uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread and can work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings, but it requires a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub.
- Level’s official battery estimates conflict: the technical-specification page says up to six months, while the current product page says up to one year.
- The $249 lock does not include the $79 Level Keypad, making the practical price about $328 before tax when code entry is required.
- Schlage Encode Plus is the more natural Apple alternative for households that want Apple Home Key and an integrated keypad in one conventional lock.
What has changed since the original Level Lock+ review?
The current Level Lock+ story is different from the Bluetooth-era product reviewed in 2023. Level announced Level Lock+ (Matter) on November 14, 2024, adding Matter-over-Thread support and a path for existing owners to receive a free Matter firmware update. Level’s announcement establishes the update program, but buyers should confirm whether a particular older hardware revision is eligible rather than assuming every Level Lock+ is identical.

Why is Level Lock+ so much less visible than other smart locks?
Level places the locking mechanism inside the door instead of adding a large touchscreen outside or a bulky motor housing inside. The outside still looks like a conventional deadbolt with a keyway, and the package includes two physical keys. Level describes the design as approximately 62% smaller than other smart locks; that is Level’s marketing comparison, not an independent measurement.
Level lists the current lock at approximately 2.8 inches high by 2.8 inches long by 4.5 inches wide and 3.02 pounds. The discreet design is a real advantage for historic doors, modern minimalist interiors, and homeowners who do not want a glowing touchscreen at the entrance. The trade-off is equally important: the lock has no integrated keypad, fingerprint reader, display, or built-in emergency power contact.
The conventional keyway is both a strength and a responsibility. A physical key provides a familiar fallback when the battery is dead or the smart-home network is unavailable, but the owner must carry the key or store it somewhere accessible. Earlier PCWorld coverage specifically highlighted the importance of retaining that fallback because the hardware did not provide a convenient external USB or 9-volt emergency-power option.

How does Apple Home Key work on Level Lock+?
Apple Home Key lets a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch act as the door key: the user brings the device near the lock’s NFC area and the lock authenticates it. Express Mode can make everyday entry faster because the user may not need to open an app or authenticate in the usual way.
Apple Home Key is the feature that makes Level Lock+ special rather than merely another connected deadbolt. An iPhone user can approach the door without finding a physical key, while an Apple Watch can provide access without taking out a phone. Apple’s power-reserve behavior can allow an iPhone to operate a Home Key for a limited period after the phone battery is depleted, but the exact duration should not be promised without checking Apple’s current documentation.
Level’s original launch requirements were an iPhone XS or later running iOS 15 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 8 or later. Those were launch-era requirements from Level’s original Level Lock+ announcement; they should not be treated as a complete current compatibility list without checking the current Apple and Level requirements.
Home Key is most valuable in an iPhone-and-Apple-Watch household. Android users can still use other supported access methods, but they do not receive the signature NFC wallet experience. Guests without a compatible Apple device need a physical key, a Level Keypad, a key card or fob, a Level pass, or another supported account-based method.
What are all the ways to lock and unlock Level Lock+?
Depending on the model, setup, and ecosystem, Level documents access through the Level Home app, Apple Home Key, the Apple Home app, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, a Key Fob or Key Card, the optional Keypad, a physical key, Touch to Lock, Touch to Unlock, Auto Unlock, and Auto Lock. Level’s access-method support documentation is the right reference for the exact combination supported by a particular installation.

| Access method | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Home Key | Fast daily entry for compatible iPhone and Apple Watch users | Apple-specific; guests need compatible devices or another method |
| Level Home app or ecosystem app | App-based control and smart-home automations | Remote control depends on the hub, controller, bridge, and platform setup |
| Level Keypad | Children, guests, cleaners, contractors, and non-Apple users | Optional $79 accessory mounted separately from the lock |
| Key Card or Key Fob | Convenient device-based entry without a phone | Must be configured and kept available |
| Physical key | Fallback for dead batteries or unavailable connectivity | The owner must carry or securely store the key |
| Touch, Auto Unlock, or Auto Lock | Hands-free or automatic routines | Behavior depends on configuration, device proximity, and ecosystem settings |
Local access and remote access are not the same thing. A physical key, Home Key, Bluetooth connection, or keypad can work locally without the lock having a direct internet connection. Remote unlocking and many automations require the appropriate Level bridge or smart-home controller, a functioning network, and correct account permissions.
Does Matter-over-Thread fix Level Lock+ connectivity?
Matter-over-Thread improves the current lock’s platform flexibility, but Matter does not mean that Level Lock+ contains built-in Wi-Fi or works remotely by itself. Level’s Matter technical specifications list Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread and name Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings as supported platforms.
The Matter model requires a Matter controller or hub with Thread Border Router capability. Depending on the ecosystem, that may be a compatible Apple TV or HomePod, Google/Nest hub, Alexa device, or SmartThings controller. The hub also needs a useful Thread signal near the door. A distant controller, thick walls, metal construction, or a weak Thread network can turn a theoretically compatible installation into an unreliable one.

Level says the lock can connect to up to three smart-home ecosystems simultaneously. Treat that as Level’s stated capability rather than a guarantee that every combination will behave identically. Adding the lock to several platforms can also create duplicate automations or confusing notifications, so decide which ecosystem should own the primary routines.
The Level Home app remains important even when Apple Home or another Matter platform is the daily interface. Level’s setup process says to install the lock, add it to the Level Home app, and then add it to the ecosystem app. The Level app is also relevant for firmware updates, guest passes, keypad codes, and Level-specific management. Follow Level’s current Matter setup sequence rather than trying to pair the lock with a platform first.
The $79 Level Connect Wi-Fi Bridge may still be useful for a setup that specifically needs Level’s Wi-Fi connectivity, but a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub can make the bridge unnecessary for supported ecosystem control. Do not buy the bridge automatically; first identify the controller and remote-access path your chosen platform requires.
How long does the Level Lock+ battery last?
Level Lock+ uses one CR2 lithium non-rechargeable battery, but Level’s own current pages give conflicting estimates. The Matter technical-specification page says up to six months, while the current product page says up to one year under typical conditions. The honest conclusion is that Level does not provide one consistent public runtime claim, so buyers should plan around usage-dependent battery life rather than a guaranteed annual replacement.
| Official source presentation | Claimed battery life | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Level Lock+ (Matter) technical specifications | Up to six months | Manufacturer estimate; useful as the more conservative planning figure |
| Current Level Lock Matter product page | Up to one year | Manufacturer estimate under typical conditions |
Actual battery life can vary with the number of lock cycles, motor load, temperature, door alignment, Bluetooth activity, and Thread conditions. Keep a replacement CR2 available. A dead battery does not remove the physical-key backup, but the failure becomes inconvenient if the key is inside the house or left somewhere inaccessible.

Earlier PCWorld coverage criticized the absence of a convenient emergency 9-volt or USB power option. That is historical third-party reporting, not a new test of the Matter model, but it remains a relevant ownership consideration. Level Lock+ is a better fit for owners who are willing to treat the physical key as part of the normal backup plan.
Is the Level Keypad included?
No. The Level Keypad is a separate $79 accessory. Level says the keypad supports up to 50 codes, including temporary or limited-time codes, uses capacitive touch with backlighting, has an IP65 weather rating, and can run for up to two years on two AAA batteries. Level lists the keypad’s Bluetooth range as 20 feet on one page and 30 feet in its technical specifications; use the more conservative 20-foot figure when planning placement.
The separate keypad is useful for families, dog walkers, cleaners, contractors, renters, and guests who should not be added to an Apple Wallet or smart-home account. The keypad also makes Level more practical in a mixed-device household. However, mounting a separate accessory means the entrance no longer has the completely invisible appearance that makes the lock appealing.

| Configuration | Observed U.S. list-price math | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Level Lock Matter alone | $249 before tax | Apple Home Key users who do not need code entry |
| Level Lock Matter plus Keypad | About $328 before tax | Households needing guest or family codes |
| Level Lock Matter plus Keypad and Connect Wi-Fi Bridge | About $407 before tax | Buyers needing both keypad access and Level’s Wi-Fi bridge |
Prices were observed on Level’s U.S. store during the research pass and can change by date, promotion, tax, and country. The key buying lesson is that the headline $249 price is not the relevant total for every household.
Is Level Lock+ secure and mechanically suitable?
Level states that the current lock is BHMA Certified AAA, meets ANSI 156.18 and 156.40 Grade 1/A claims, and has been tested to 250,000 cycles. Level equates that cycle figure to 135 years of average use. Those are manufacturer certification and testing claims, not a guarantee that every installed door will resist every physical, electronic, or account-level attack.
Level specifies compatibility with 23⁄8-inch or 23⁄4-inch backsets, doors approximately 13⁄4 to 2 inches thick, and a standard 21⁄8-inch bore. Level rates the lock IPx4 for water resistance and lists an operating range of −4°F to 140°F. The technical documentation also warns that the supplied strike plates are required and that strike plates from other manufacturers will not work.
A smart deadbolt is only as reliable as the door around it. A door that sags, scrapes, or requires pressure to extend the bolt can produce motor noise, failed locking, slow operation, and unnecessary battery drain. Fix alignment and frame problems before diagnosing a wireless or software problem. Account passwords, phone security, hub permissions, and network configuration matter too; no certification makes a smart lock “unhackable.”
Is Level Lock+ easy to install?
Level Lock+ can be a straightforward replacement on a compatible standard door, but “easy installation” depends on mechanical fit and alignment. The installation should be treated as a compatibility project first and a screwdriver project second.

- Install the Level interior mechanism and exterior cylinder according to the current instructions.
- Install the supplied Level strike plate; do not substitute a strike plate from another manufacturer.
- Insert the CR2 battery.
- Install the Level Home app and add the lock.
- Calibrate or configure the lock when the app prompts you.
- Add Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings through the appropriate Matter process.
- Add the keypad, codes, key cards, fobs, guest passes, and automations if required.
- Test locking and unlocking with the door open before relying on the lock with the door closed.
Level’s official setup documentation recommends adding the lock to the Level Home app before adding it to the selected ecosystem app. Do not skip the open-door test: a lock that appears to pair correctly can still fail because the bolt is misaligned with the strike.
What does long-term ownership actually tell us?
The strongest historical long-term finding is that Apple Home Key remained the preferred way to unlock the lock in the 9to5Mac review. The review’s main reservation was the optional keypad: a separate keypad was less convenient than the integrated keypad on a lock such as Schlage Encode Plus.
That review is useful evidence about the original ownership experience, but it was published on May 12, 2023, before the November 2024 Matter version. It cannot establish current Matter reliability, current battery behavior, or whether every older hardware revision receives the update.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →PCWorld’s earlier coverage praised Apple Home integration while noting bridge requirements for some remote-control functions, the lack of an emergency USB or 9-volt power solution, and the need to carry the physical key. The same coverage also raised the issue that Thread was not initially active for Matter. The current Matter model changes that connectivity story, but historical criticism should not be silently rewritten as a test of the current hardware.
A responsible current long-term evaluation should separately verify Matter-update eligibility for older owners, Apple Home Key behavior after migration, battery changes after updating, simultaneous multi-ecosystem operation, firmware-update requirements, calibration failures, motor noise, delayed responses, low-battery notifications, and support or replacement policies. The supplied evidence does not provide a statistical failure rate or firsthand testing of those issues, so this review does not pretend that it does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Level Lock+ compare with Schlage, Yale, and Aqara?
Level wins on discreet design and Apple Home Key simplicity. Competing locks generally win when the buyer wants an integrated keypad, fingerprint access, a more visible status interface, or a package that does not require purchasing a separate keypad.
| Lock | Apple Home Key | Matter/Thread position | Entry approach | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level Lock+ Matter | Yes | Matter-over-Thread; compatible hub required | Physical key, Home Key, apps, optional keypad, fob/card, touch and automation features | Design-conscious Apple households with a suitable Thread setup |
| Schlage Encode Plus | Yes | Verify the current exact model and connectivity | Integrated keypad and conventional smart-lock hardware | Apple households that want code entry included |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus | Yes on the Plus model | Varies by exact lock and module | Touchscreen/keypad-centered design; battery and connectivity vary by version | Buyers who prefer a visible interface and code access |

Schlage Encode Plus: Schlage is the closest practical alternative for an Apple household that wants Apple Home Key and a built-in keypad. The design is more conventional and visibly larger, and current availability, model number, finish, and street price should be checked before purchase. Schlage’s official Encode Plus product information is the appropriate place to verify the exact model.

Aqara: The U100, U200, and U400 are separate products, not one interchangeable family. Aqara is worth considering when keypad, fingerprint, NFC, or other access methods matter more than Level’s near-invisible design. Hub requirements, regional availability, and exact feature support vary; check the model-specific Aqara U100 information before treating it as a direct substitute.
Should you buy Level Lock Pro or Level Bolt instead?
Level Lock Pro is the in-brand alternative for buyers who like Level’s discreet approach but want a newer model. Level lists Level Lock Pro at $349 and describes it as its smallest and most advanced Level Lock yet. The higher price should be justified by verified improvements in battery life, connectivity, security, or access methods; the available evidence here does not establish how much better those areas are.
Level Bolt is a different proposition. Level lists the Matter-over-Thread and Bluetooth model at $199, and the retrofit mechanism is designed to preserve compatible existing exterior deadbolt hardware. Level Bolt is attractive when changing the visible exterior hardware is undesirable, but compatibility with the existing deadbolt housing must be checked. The Level Bolt Matter information describes the product; Level Bolt is not the same complete replacement package as Level Lock+.
Who should buy Level Lock+?
- Buy it if Apple Home Key is the main reason you want a smart lock, your door is compatible, and you already have or plan to install a suitable Thread/Matter hub.
- Buy it if appearance is unusually important. Level’s internal mechanism avoids the large exterior touchscreen and bulky interior motor found on many competitors.
- Buy it with the keypad if children, guests, cleaners, contractors, dog walkers, or Android users need code-based entry. Budget about $328 before tax at the observed U.S. list prices.
- Think twice if you expect Wi-Fi remote access without a bridge or smart-home hub, because Matter-over-Thread is not standalone Wi-Fi.
- Choose Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus if an integrated keypad is more important than an invisible design.
- Consider Aqara if fingerprint or a wider range of access methods matters more than the simplest Apple Home Key experience.
- Consider Level Bolt if preserving the existing exterior deadbolt hardware is the priority.
- Do not install any motorized lock on a binding door until the alignment problem is repaired.
Final verdict
Level Lock+ remains arguably the best-looking Apple Home Key lock, not the universal best smart lock. The current Matter-over-Thread model makes Level more compelling for mixed Apple, Google, Alexa, and SmartThings homes than the 2023 product was, but the hub requirement, conflicting battery estimates, physical-key backup, and separate $79 keypad prevent a blanket recommendation.
Buy Level Lock+ Matter when the priorities are discreet hardware, Apple Home Key, and a conventional physical-key fallback. Choose Schlage Encode Plus when keypad access must be included. Choose Yale or Aqara when a visible keypad, fingerprint access, or a broader set of entry methods matters more than Level’s minimalist design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Level Lock+ still worth buying?
Level Lock+ is still worth buying for an Apple Home Key user who values discreet design and has a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub. Level Lock+ is a weaker value when the $79 keypad or $79 bridge is also required.
Does the current Level Lock+ work without Wi-Fi?
Level Lock+ does not require built-in Wi-Fi because the current model uses Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread. Remote smart-home control still requires the appropriate Matter controller, Thread network, or Level connectivity setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan existing Level Lock+ owners get Matter?
Level announced a free Matter firmware-update program for existing Level Lock+ owners in November 2024. Eligibility should be confirmed for the specific hardware revision because the available announcement does not establish that every older revision is eligible.
How often does the Level Lock+ battery need replacing?
Level’s official claims range from up to six months on the Matter technical-specification page to up to one year on the current product page. Usage, temperature, door alignment, and wireless conditions affect actual life, so keeping a spare CR2 battery is sensible.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Level Lock+ Matter is a specialist recommendation: an excellent-looking Apple Home Key lock for buyers with a suitable Thread hub, but not the best overall choice for households that need an included keypad, fingerprint entry, simpler Wi-Fi access, or the lowest complete-system cost.
