Editor’s note: This review is labeled 2025, but Choice Home Warranty’s publicly accessible consumer pages now display 2026 content. That matters because plan names, availability, service fees, and pricing can change. The current website does not publish a universal 2025 price, so any older dollar figures should be treated as historical rather than current.
Choice Home Warranty is a contract-based home-service plan, not homeowners insurance and not a guarantee that every failed appliance will be replaced. It can make sense for homeowners who want a predictable way to request service for covered systems, but the contract has a $100 standard service-call fee, a 30-day waiting period, coverage caps, exclusions, and restrictions on which contractor performs the work.
Choice Home Warranty at a glance
| Category | What the current information shows |
|---|---|
| Current consumer plans | Basic Plan and Total Plan |
| Current standard service fee | $100 per claim, although the contract may specify a different amount or discount |
| Published nationwide price | None; Choice requires a location-specific quote |
| Waiting period | Generally 30 days after receipt of the agreement fee |
| Availability | 49 states; Washington is currently excluded |
| Claims | Online account center and phone support advertised as available 24/7/365 |
| General coverage limit | Up to $3,000 per covered item per 12-month period in the sample agreement, with lower limits for some items |
| BBB status | Not BBB accredited; the current profile reports a substantial complaint volume |
Choice’s value depends less on the advertising headline than on three details: whether your equipment is listed, whether its failure fits the contract’s exclusions, and whether the potential repair is worth paying the service fee and annual plan cost.

The current consumer website lists two plans. Older articles and real-estate materials may refer to Choice Plan, Choice Plus, or Choice Ultimate. Those names should not be presented as the current standard retail lineup without identifying the relevant state or contract version.

- Easy Claims Process: File a claim anytime online or by phone. Most claims approved within minutes. We will send you an e-gift card for the purchase price of your covered product. In some instances, we will replace or repair it.
- Product Eligibility: Plan must be purchased with a product or within 30 days of the product purchase. Pre-existing conditions are not covered.
- Terms & Details: More information about this protection plan is available within the “Product guides and documents” section. Simply click “User Guide” for more info. | Plan | Items shown on the current plan page |
|---|---|
| Basic Plan | Heating system, electrical system, plumbing system, plumbing stoppage, water heater, whirlpool bathtub, oven/range/stove, cooktop, dishwasher, built-in microwave, garbage disposal, ductwork, garage-door opener, and ceiling/exhaust fans |
| Total Plan | Everything in Basic, plus air conditioning, refrigerator, clothes washer, and clothes dryer |
Choice labels the Total Plan “Most Popular.” That does not automatically make it the better purchase. If your main concern is an older furnace and plumbing, the Basic Plan may cover the relevant categories. If you want refrigerator, washer, dryer, or air-conditioning coverage, those additions make Total the plan to compare.
Optional coverage
Choice currently lists optional coverage for:
- Pool or spa
- Well pump
- Sump pump
- Central vacuum
- Limited roof leak
- Septic system
- Second refrigerator
- Stand-alone freezer
- Septic-tank pumping
Availability and terms can vary by state. An item appearing on the public website is not enough to establish that it is included in your quote; check the quote and the Coverage Details attached to your agreement.
How much does Choice Home Warranty cost?
There is no single nationwide monthly or annual price published on the current consumer pages. Choice says that plans, pricing, and service availability vary by state, so a review quoting one national price is likely using an old price, a particular ZIP code, or an unverified estimate.
The live quote process is straightforward but collects contact information:
- Open the Choice quote page.
- Enter your ZIP code in “Enter Your Zip Code.”
- Select “FIND YOUR PLAN.”
- Enter a phone number in “Home Phone” and/or “Mobile Phone.”
- Select “Get Quote.”
The consent notice says that submitting the form authorizes contact by email, phone, and text, including automated technology and third-party offers. It also says consent is not required to obtain Choice’s goods or services. If you do not want sales calls, review the notice carefully before submitting your number.
First-month promotion
The current website advertises “First Month Free” with the purchase of a single-payment plan. Do not assume the offer applies to monthly billing. Confirm the promotion’s eligibility, payment requirement, renewal price, and cancellation terms before paying.
The service-call fee
The current consumer FAQ states a $100 trade service-call fee per claim. It is paid directly to the assigned technician and applies regardless of whether the technician repairs, replaces, or cannot repair the item. A discount may reduce the fee, and your Coverage Details control the actual amount charged.

Rank #2
Older Choice reviews often quote $65 or $75. Those figures should not be treated as the current standard fee unless they are tied to a specific state, promotion, or contract. If a repair would cost only $120, a $100 service fee leaves little financial benefit before considering the plan premium.
How claims work
Choice advertises 24-hour, seven-day availability. Its FAQ says customers can submit a claim through the online account center 24/7/365, and the call center is also advertised as available 24/7/365. On the public website, look for Request Service; account access is labeled Customer Login. The claims portal is hosted at claimcenter.choicehomewarranty.com.
Availability around the clock does not mean a technician will arrive immediately. Choice says it begins contacting service providers within four hours after a request. The sample agreement also says that, in some circumstances, it may take more than 48 hours for a provider to accept the request.
Recommended claim procedure
- Stop using the failing equipment if continued use could cause damage or create a safety risk.
- Request service as soon as you discover the malfunction and before the agreement expires.
- Use Choice’s portal or phone channel. Save the claim number, submission time, photos, error codes, and all messages.
- Wait for Choice’s assigned provider. The agreement gives Choice the right to select the service company.
- Pay the applicable service fee directly to the technician.
- Do not authorize outside work without written approval. The agreement says Choice will not reimburse services performed without prior approval.
The last step is especially important. Hiring your own plumber or HVAC contractor first and asking Choice to reimburse you later can turn an otherwise covered problem into an unpaid bill.
Waiting period and pre-existing conditions
The sample agreement generally starts coverage 30 days after Choice receives the agreement fee. Earlier activation may be available if you provide proof of uninterrupted coverage through another carrier.
Covered systems must be in proper working order on the effective date. The agreement generally excludes both known and unknown pre-existing conditions, even though Choice says a home inspection is not required. In practical terms, “no inspection” does not mean that a defect present before coverage automatically qualifies for service.
Arizona has a significant state-specific exception: the current agreement says Arizona coverage does not exclude a pre-existing condition if the condition was known, or reasonably should have been known, by Choice or someone selling the agreement on its behalf. State-specific contract language controls.
Rank #3
Coverage limits and replacement rules
The sample agreement sets a general maximum liability of $3,000 per covered item per 12-month period. That figure includes access, diagnosis, repair, and replacement. Where several items appear under one numbered contract section, the agreement says the limit applies in the aggregate.
Some benefits have much lower limits:
| Covered item or benefit | Sample agreement limit |
|---|---|
| Limited roof leak | Up to $500 |
| Septic system | Up to $500 |
| Sprinkler system | Up to $500 |
| Stand-alone ice maker | Up to $500 |
| Trash compactor | Up to $500 |
| Septic-tank pumping | Up to $250 per agreement term |
These are examples from the sample agreement, not a substitute for the contract issued in your state.
Choice retains the sole right to decide whether to repair, replace, or provide cash or a cash equivalent. A cash payment may be based on Choice’s actual cost, which the agreement says can be below retail and excludes items such as shipping, tax, and installation.
If Choice pays cash instead of replacing an item, the agreement says you cannot make another claim on that item for 12 months from the payment date. A replacement also may not match your existing appliance. For listed appliances, the contract promises similar features, capacity, and efficiency, but does not necessarily promise the same dimensions, brand, or color.
Important exclusions
A plan can list an appliance while excluding the failure you actually experience. The sample agreement excludes or limits:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Routine maintenance
- Misuse, abuse, neglect, and physical damage
- Manufacturer recalls or defects
- Items still covered by a manufacturer or distributor warranty
- Building-code or zoning-code upgrades
- Permit costs
- Solar systems and equipment
- Electronic or computerized energy-management systems
- Commercial properties and commercial-grade equipment
- Upgrades or modifications required by incompatible replacement equipment or refrigerant changes
- Separate disposal charges that a service provider imposes
HVAC coverage deserves particular caution. The sample agreement covers specified heating, air-conditioning, and ductwork components, but excludes items including refrigerant line sets, service valves, damper motors, window units, portable units, outside or underground piping, and collapsed or clogged ductwork. Labor and refrigerant costs can also be excluded when the relevant component remains under a manufacturer’s warranty.
Availability and California terms
Choice’s current coverage page says it serves 49 states and does not currently cover Washington. Claims that Choice serves all 50 states are outdated unless they describe a different period or product.
Rank #4
- No Additional Cost: You pay nothing for repairs – parts, labor, and shipping included.
- Coverage: Plan starts on the date of purchase. Drops, spills and cracked screens due to normal use covered for portable products and power surges covered from day one. Malfunctions covered after the manufacturer's warranty.
- Easy Claims Process: File a claim anytime online or by phone. Most claims approved within minutes. If we can’t repair it, we’ll send you an Amazon e-gift card for the purchase price of your covered product or replace it.
- Product Eligibility: Plan must be purchased with a product or within 30 days of the product purchase. Pre-existing conditions are not covered.

California uses a special structure. Choice-branded contracts there are issued and offered by Home Service Club of California, Inc., and sold exclusively by Home Service Club of California Insurance Services, Inc. California customers should read the California-specific terms rather than relying on a general sample agreement.
Cancellation and renewal
The sample agreement allows cancellation at any time. Within the first 30 days, the refund generally subtracts service costs from the agreement fee. After 30 days, the refund is generally prorated for the unexpired term, again less service costs. An administrative fee of up to $50, or the amount allowed by law, may apply.
Fixed-term plans may renew into a monthly plan at the prevailing monthly rate unless canceled. Monthly plans automatically renew each month subject to the required notice. For cancellation under the sample agreement, Choice lists 1-888-531-5403. State-specific rules may override these general terms.
Complaints and regulatory context
Choice’s Better Business Bureau profile currently says the company is not BBB accredited. The profile reports 10,069 complaints in the previous three years and 2,738 complaints closed in the previous 12 months. The largest category is service or repair complaints, with 6,651, followed by customer service with 1,393.
Those figures deserve attention, but they are not a failure rate. The BBB summary does not provide the number of active contracts used as a denominator, and complaint totals include the company’s headquarters and corporate-owned locations. Read the complaint descriptions and response patterns rather than treating the raw total as a percentage.
There is also a major recent Arizona development. On January 23, 2026, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced an $11.8 million settlement judgment with Choice Home Warranty. The announcement says the judgment requires sales-practice reforms and meaningful disclosures before warranties are sold. Choice denied the allegations and did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement. The Arizona Attorney General also said customers who bought a Choice warranty by telephone between January 1, 2013, and January 1, 2023, for an Arizona home may be eligible for restitution, with further instructions to follow.

Choice may be worth comparing if:
- You own an older home and want a single claims channel for several systems.
- You can absorb the service fee and any uncovered installation, permit, code, or upgrade costs.
- You are comfortable allowing the company to choose the technician and decide repair versus replacement.
- You have checked the contract’s limits against the likely cost of your equipment.
It may be a poor fit if:
- You expect to choose your own contractor.
- You need guaranteed same-day service.
- Your HVAC system has excluded components or known pre-existing problems.
- You require an identical replacement by brand, color, or dimensions.
- Your covered item is still protected by a manufacturer warranty.
- You are buying mainly because of an advertised discount without checking the renewal price.
What to check before buying
- Get the quote using your actual ZIP code.
- Record the plan price, billing schedule, service fee, promotion, and renewal terms.
- Download the agreement and Coverage Details before paying.
- Search the contract for the exact appliance or system, not just a broad category such as “HVAC.”
- Check the per-item and aggregate limits.
- Look for pre-existing-condition, maintenance, code-upgrade, permit, refrigerant, and manufacturer-warranty exclusions.
- Ask what happens if the company offers cash instead of replacement.
- Confirm that your state’s contract matches the general sample agreement.
FAQ
Does Choice Home Warranty cover all 50 states?

What is Choice Home Warranty’s current service fee?
The current consumer FAQ states $100 per trade service call. Your Coverage Details may specify a different fee or a discount, so check the contract rather than relying on an older review quoting $65 or $75.
Can I use my own repair company?
Usually not without prior approval. The sample agreement gives Choice the right to select the service provider and says it will not reimburse work performed without prior approval.
Does Choice guarantee that it will replace a failed appliance?
No. Choice has the contractual discretion to repair, replace, or offer cash or a cash equivalent. Replacement equipment may not match the original brand, color, or dimensions.

Is there a waiting period?
The sample agreement generally begins coverage 30 days after Choice receives the agreement fee. Earlier coverage may be available with proof of uninterrupted prior coverage through another carrier.
Does Choice cover pre-existing conditions?
Generally, the sample agreement excludes known and unknown pre-existing conditions. Arizona has a state-specific exception concerning conditions known, or reasonably should have been known, by Choice or its seller.
How do I cancel Choice Home Warranty?
The sample agreement says customers may cancel at any time and lists 1-888-531-5403 for cancellation. Refunds, service-cost deductions, administrative fees, and notice requirements depend on the contract and state law.
The Bottom Line
Choice Home Warranty offers a broad Basic and Total plan structure, 24/7 claim access, and optional coverage for items such as pools, wells, and septic systems. Its weaknesses are equally important: the current standard service fee is $100, coverage generally starts after 30 days, Choice selects the contractor, and the company controls whether to repair, replace, or pay cash within contract limits.
