The best iPad note-taking app depends on what you do with the Apple Pencil. Apple Notes is the best free starting point, Goodnotes is the strongest all-purpose digital notebook, Notability is particularly good for recorded lectures, and MyScript Notes is the specialist choice for turning handwriting into editable text. OneNote remains the practical choice for Microsoft 365 users, but its iPad app does not convert handwriting to text.
This comparison focuses on Apple Pencil writing, handwriting recognition, PDF annotation, audio recording, transcription, search, syncing, and the limitations that can affect your choice in 2026.

2. Goodnotes: best all-purpose digital notebook
Goodnotes is the strongest general-purpose choice for people who want their iPad to replace paper notebooks, binders, and marked-up PDFs. It combines handwritten and typed notes, PDF annotation, notebook templates, whiteboards, text documents, study sets, handwriting search, and audio recording.
Its search can cover handwritten text, typed text, and text inside PDFs. That makes it more useful than a simple drawing app when you have a large library of lecture notes or reference documents.
Audio synchronized with handwriting
To record in a notebook, use:
Toolbar > Record and Summarize
After stopping the recording, tap the waveform icon to open the audio panel. Goodnotes’ Note Replay feature can replay audio while showing the handwriting created at that point. Available replay modes include Spotlight, Real-time reveal, and Static. Replay settings apply to notebook documents, not Whiteboards or Text Documents.

Goodnotes plans
| Plan | Listed price | Notable limits or additions |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to three notebooks, 100 MB storage, limited sharing, up to three files, and a 5 MB import limit |
| Essential | $11.99 per year | Unlimited notebooks, full sharing, 5 GB storage, basic AI features, and unlimited audio recording |
| Pro | $35.99 per year | Cross-platform sync, collaboration features, and more advanced AI capabilities |
| AI Pass | $9.99 per month | Expanded AI access as an add-on |
Prices can differ by country and App Store. Goodnotes introduced the Essential, Pro, and AI Pass structure on September 23, 2025. Existing GoodNotes 5 purchases were not automatically invalidated, but the current product is branded Goodnotes, not simply “GoodNotes 6.”
For on-device audio transcription, Goodnotes requires an iPad or iPhone with an A15 chip or M1 chip or newer and iPadOS 17 or later. The free tier limits recordings to 20 minutes and three documents; paid plans remove those limits. Cloud transcription requires an internet connection and supports many more languages.
Choose Goodnotes if: you want a paper-like notebook system, frequent PDF markup, handwriting search, or audio that can be replayed with your writing.
3. Notability: best for lectures and recorded meetings
Notability is built around a particularly effective lecture workflow: write or draw with the Apple Pencil while recording the speaker. Audio is synchronized with the strokes, so tapping a section of handwriting can take you back to the corresponding part of the recording.

For a handwritten equation, use Convert > Math instead.
Notability can search handwriting across notes or within one note. However, handwriting recognition is not always instant. The app processes handwriting in existing notes while it is open, so newly imported or older notes may need time in the foreground before all writing becomes searchable.

Transcripts are time-stamped and can be copied into the note or another app. Transcription requires an internet connection, and unlimited transcripts are available to Notability Plus subscribers. Expect weaker results with background noise, multiple speakers, movie or theater audio, and recordings that switch between languages. Transcription is unavailable in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Notability currently offers subscription plans and a Classic one-time purchase option. The Classic option includes features such as handwriting recognition, handwriting search, handwritten math conversion to LaTeX, live collaboration, and device syncing through Notability Cloud. Prices can change, so check the current pricing page before purchasing.
Choose Notability if: your notes are primarily lectures, interviews, classes, or meetings where synchronized audio matters more than elaborate notebook organization.

It can turn handwriting into editable text in real time, recognize mathematical notation and diagrams, support pen gestures, search handwritten notes, annotate PDFs, and export work to PDF, PNG, SVG, Word, or its native format.
Four note formats
- Notebook: fixed-size pages that resemble a traditional notebook.
- Document: responsive pages that reflow as content changes.
- Board: an expandable free-form canvas.
- PDF: imported multi-page documents with editable, searchable annotations.
This makes MyScript Notes a strong option for students, researchers, and professionals who want to write naturally but finish with clean, editable text.
Important language and OCR limitations
Only one recognition language can be selected per note, although English is always recognized alongside the selected language. Right-to-left languages, including Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu, are not currently supported.
MyScript Notes recognizes handwriting, but it is not a general OCR tool for extracting ordinary printed text from photographs. If scanning text from images is your priority, Apple Notes or a dedicated document-scanning app may be more suitable.
Sync can use iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox with a free MyScript account. Paid mobile plans work on up to 10 Android and iOS devices. The Windows Nebo application is a separate purchase.
Choose MyScript Notes if: you regularly need to transform handwritten paragraphs, equations, and diagrams into editable documents.

To search on iPad:
- Tap the magnifying-glass icon.
- Choose
Search All Notebooks. - Enter a keyword or phrase.
- Tap the notebook name below the search box if you want to narrow the scope.
The key limitation is easy to miss: OneNote for iPad currently does not convert handwriting to text. Microsoft documentation about the “Ink to Text” pen applies to supported desktop versions of OneNote, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, not the iPad app.
Choose OneNote if: your school or workplace already uses Microsoft 365, shared team notebooks, and Microsoft account permissions. Do not choose it specifically for handwriting-to-text conversion on iPad.
Which iPad note-taking app should you choose?
| Your priority | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Free Apple Pencil notes | Apple Notes | No separate purchase and strong iPad integration |
| Paper-like notebooks and PDFs | Goodnotes | Broad notebook, template, search, and annotation tools |
| Recorded lectures | Notability | Audio stays synchronized with handwriting and includes transcripts |
| Editable handwriting and equations | MyScript Notes | Recognition and conversion are central to the app |
| Microsoft 365 collaboration | OneNote | Best fit for shared Microsoft notebooks and organizational accounts |
What to check before installing
- Apple Pencil model: pressure-sensitive ink is not available on every Pencil model, including Apple Pencil USB-C.
- iPad hardware: audio transcription and newer handwriting features may require an A15, M1, or newer chip, depending on the app.
- Languages: transcription and handwriting recognition are language-dependent. Confirm support for the language you actually write or record.
- Cloud requirements: some transcription modes work on-device, while others require an internet connection.
- Export and sync: check whether your preferred cloud service, desktop platform, and file format are supported before moving an existing notebook library.
- Pricing model: compare free limits, subscriptions, and one-time purchase options rather than judging an app by its download price.
For most people, start with Apple Notes because it costs nothing and tests whether the iPad-and-Pencil workflow suits you. Move to Goodnotes when you need a deeper notebook and PDF system, Notability when synchronized recordings are central, or MyScript Notes when editable handwriting is the main requirement.
