The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM is the best HDMI 2.1 monitor for PS5 in 2026 if you want the strongest overall image quality, 4K/120Hz support, excellent motion, and OLED contrast. The Sony INZONE M9 II is the better PlayStation-focused IPS alternative, while the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A is the clearest value choice.

A suitable PS5 monitor must do more than display an HDMI 2.1 logo. The monitor needs to accept a PS5-compatible 4K/120Hz signal, support HDMI VRR, provide low input lag, and offer HDR performance appropriate to its panel. The recommendations below separate genuine 4K/120Hz options from cheaper 1440p displays that do not meet the full brief.

Key takeaways

  • The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM is the best overall HDMI 2.1 monitor for PS5 and PS5 Pro when premium pricing and OLED trade-offs are acceptable.
  • The Sony INZONE M9 II combines a 27-inch 4K IPS panel, HDMI 2.1 VRR, DisplayHDR 600, full-array local dimming, Auto HDR Tone Mapping, and Auto Genre Picture Mode for PlayStation.
  • The ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A is a verified value option with native 4K/120Hz PS5 support, 4:4:4 chroma, VRR, and a 144Hz maximum refresh rate, but its DisplayHDR 400 performance is basic.
  • A 240Hz monitor does not make PS5 games run above 120Hz; the extra refresh-rate headroom is mainly useful when the same monitor is connected to a gaming PC.
  • PS5 4K/120Hz monitor support means that the monitor can accept the signal; individual games still need a 120Hz mode and may render at lower or variable frame rates.

Which is the best HDMI 2.1 monitor for PS5 in 2026?

The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM is the best overall choice based on current independent PS5 monitor testing. The 27-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor combines HDMI 2.1, PS5 4K/120Hz compatibility, near-instantaneous response, near-infinite contrast, and strong HDR image quality. RTINGS’ current PS5 monitor comparison ranks the ASUS above the other tested options, but that ranking is an editorial result from a particular test methodology rather than proof that the ASUS is best at every price or in every region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PG27UCDM’s 240Hz maximum refresh rate is valuable for a PC but not for increasing PS5 performance. PS5 output tops out at 120Hz, so PS5-only buyers should also compare the monitor’s HDR, VRR reliability, brightness, warranty, and price rather than paying a premium solely for 240Hz.

What should you look for in a 4K 120Hz monitor for PS5?

The most important specification is not the HDMI 2.1 label; the most important specification is verified 4K/120Hz input over HDMI. The official PS5 4K and video-output guide confirms that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz, but the monitor still needs a suitable HDMI input and compatible implementation.

HDMI 2.1 connector versus usable bandwidth

An HDMI 2.1 connector identifies the interface standard, but the label alone does not tell you the signal capacity provided by a particular monitor. Some products use HDMI 2.1 branding for inputs that do not offer the full bandwidth readers expect. Confirm the supported resolution, refresh rate, chroma format, HDR behavior, and VRR combination.

The ASUS VG28UQL1A is a useful example of the level of detail buyers should seek. ASUS states that the VG28UQL1A supports full 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, native 4K/120Hz on PS5, and 4:4:4 chroma. That is more informative than simply listing HDMI 2.1 among the ports.

Specification Why it matters on PS5 What to verify
4K/120Hz over HDMI Allows the console to send its highest practical resolution and refresh-rate combination Explicit manufacturer claim or reliable independent test
HDMI bandwidth Determines whether high-resolution, high-refresh signals work without unwanted compromises Actual supported signal and chroma, not just the HDMI version
HDMI VRR Helps reduce tearing and uneven motion when frame rates fluctuate PS5-compatible HDMI VRR, ideally tested at 4K/120Hz
Input lag Reduces the delay between controller input and on-screen response Test results at the resolution and refresh rate you will use
Motion handling Determines clarity during camera movement and fast gameplay Response behavior at 120Hz, including dark transitions
HDR implementation Controls highlight brightness, shadow detail, and contrast Brightness, local dimming or OLED contrast, and tone mapping
Connectivity Determines whether the monitor works conveniently with PS5, PC, audio, and accessories Number of HDMI 2.1 inputs, DisplayPort, USB hub, USB-C, and headphone output
OLED policy Matters if the monitor will display static desktop elements for long periods Current regional burn-in warranty and panel-care terms

Which PS5 monitor should you buy?

ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM: best overall

Buy the PG27UCDM if you want the best combination of 4K detail, OLED contrast, fast motion, HDR impact, and PC flexibility. The 27-inch QD-OLED panel, HDMI 2.1 input, and PS5 4K/120Hz compatibility make the monitor a strong fit for both PS5 and PS5 Pro owners. The monitor’s 240Hz capability is primarily a PC feature.

OLED provides near-instantaneous response and near-perfect blacks, which is especially effective in a dim gaming room. The trade-offs are premium pricing, lower suitability for some bright rooms, and long-term image-retention or burn-in risk when static elements are displayed repeatedly. QD-OLED black levels can also appear raised or purplish under ambient light, a behavior noted in RTINGS’ testing of the ASUS and Dell QD-OLED models.

Check the current regional price and ASUS’s current OLED panel-care and warranty terms before buying. The supplied research did not establish a reliable publication-day price.

Sony INZONE M9 II: best for PlayStation features

Choose the INZONE M9 II if PlayStation integration matters more to you than OLED’s black levels and response time. Sony lists a 26.9-inch 3840×2160 IPS panel, HDMI refresh rates up to 144Hz, HDMI 2.1 VRR, DisplayHDR 600, full-array local dimming, Auto HDR Tone Mapping, and Auto Genre Picture Mode in the official specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode are the M9 II’s distinctive console-oriented features. The IPS panel avoids OLED burn-in concerns and can be more practical in a mixed-use room, while full-array local dimming improves contrast over a conventional edge-lit IPS monitor.

Sony’s specification page identifies HDMI 2.1 and 4K gaming compatibility, but the supplied research calls for verifying exact PS5 4K/120Hz behavior from a current independent test or the final product manual before making a stronger claim. The M9 II is therefore best described as a highly credible PlayStation-focused choice rather than an unconditional image-quality winner.

ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A: best verified value

Buy the VG28UQL1A when OLED pricing is too high and you want a clearly documented 4K/120Hz HDMI 2.1 signal. The 28-inch 3840×2160 Fast IPS panel supports a 144Hz maximum refresh rate, VRR, native 4K/120Hz PS5 output, and 4:4:4 chroma according to ASUS’s product specifications.

The major compromise is HDR. DisplayHDR 400 confirms compatibility with an HDR standard, but the certification does not make the VG28UQL1A equivalent to a high-end OLED or a strong mini-LED monitor. Buy the ASUS TUF model for its reliable 4K/120Hz fundamentals, not for flagship HDR brightness or OLED-level blacks.

Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx: best direction for a bright room

Consider the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx if the room is bright and you prefer a non-OLED display with stronger brightness potential. RTINGS lists the Acer as a 27-inch 4K IPS monitor with HDMI 2.1 and PS5 signal support, while noting that the Acer is brighter than the OLED alternatives but not as fast as OLED. See the independent comparison for the tested behavior.

  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

The exact Acer model suffix must be checked carefully because Acer naming and availability vary by market. Confirm that the regional model is the same specification before relying on a review or retailer listing. Acer’s supplied official link is a general US monitor category rather than a model-specific product page, so publication-day availability and specifications need a final check.

Dell Alienware AW2725Q: best premium alternative on sale

Choose the AW2725Q when it is substantially cheaper or easier to obtain than the ASUS. The Dell is another 27-inch 4K QD-OLED with HDMI 2.1, excellent motion clarity, deep blacks, and strong HDR color.

RTINGS places the Alienware below the PG27UCDM because of less accurate HDR, lower brightness, and the absence of an audio jack. Bright-room users should also consider the raised-black behavior associated with QD-OLED panels. Check the official Dell product page for the current regional price, availability, and warranty terms.

Is OLED worth it for PS5?

OLED is worth paying for when you play in a dim room, value perfect blacks and fast motion above maximum brightness, and will use the monitor for both console and PC gaming. OLED’s instantaneous response and high perceived contrast make dark games and rapid camera movement look particularly clean.

IPS or mini-LED is a better fit when the room is bright, static desktop use is frequent, or you do not want to manage OLED panel-care considerations. IPS generally has weaker native contrast and slower response than OLED, while mini-LED can produce blooming around bright objects because of its local-dimming zones. OLED burn-in is a long-term risk that depends on usage and manufacturer policy; it is not an inevitable failure.

Panel type Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
QD-OLED/OLED Dark or controlled rooms; image quality and motion priority Near-perfect blacks, very fast response, excellent contrast, strong HDR impact Higher cost, image-retention risk, reduced bright-room suitability, possible raised blacks
Fast IPS Mixed use and bright rooms No OLED burn-in concern, generally lower cost, useful brightness, sharp 4K image Weaker native contrast and usually less immediate motion
Mini-LED IPS Bright-room HDR gaming Higher brightness and stronger local contrast than ordinary IPS Blooming or halos, model-dependent dimming behavior, often higher cost

Is 4K better than 1440p for PS5?

4K is the correct default for this HDMI 2.1 monitor brief. A 4K display gives PS5 and PS5 Pro owners higher pixel density and sharper image detail, particularly at a desk or in single-player games. A 1440p monitor can be a sensible lower-cost competitive option, but a 1440p panel is not a 4K PS5 monitor simply because it has an HDMI 2.1 connector.

Sony’s 27-inch PlayStation monitor demonstrates the distinction: Sony’s display has two HDMI 2.1 inputs, VRR, HDR, and up to 120Hz on PS5, but its native resolution is QHD 2560×1440 rather than 4K. Sony’s official product page identifies the monitor as QHD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose 4K for PS5 Pro, sharper desk viewing, and long-term use. Choose 1440p when the lower purchase price matters more than maximum resolution or when high-refresh PC gaming is the primary use.

Does every PS5 game run at 4K and 120Hz?

No. A 4K/120Hz monitor can accept the signal, but the game must provide a 120Hz mode and the console must render that mode. Many PS5 games offer a choice between a higher-fidelity 30fps or 60fps mode and a performance mode targeting 60fps or 120fps.

A monitor’s refresh rate is not the same as a game’s frame rate. A 240Hz monitor cannot make a PS5 output above 120Hz, and a monitor marked 144Hz does not mean that every game will run at 144fps. The PS5 Pro makes a 4K/120Hz monitor more compelling because enhanced rendering can improve image quality and performance in supported games, but PS5 Pro still does not guarantee 4K/120fps in every title.

Do not use 8K as a general PS5 monitor buying criterion. The supplied Sony guidance reserves certain 8K options for the CFI-7000 model group rather than treating 8K as a universal PS5 feature. Check Sony’s current PS5 model and video-output guidance if 8K is specifically relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PS5 support VRR on monitors?

Yes, PS5 supports VRR on compatible HDMI displays, but the monitor must support the console’s HDMI VRR behavior. DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync or PC FreeSync support alone is not sufficient evidence. Sony instructs users to enable VRR under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR and notes that performance varies by display. Sony’s PS5 guide documents the VRR setting and connected-display behavior.

Before buying, verify whether VRR works at 4K/120Hz, whether its operating range is suitable, and whether enabling VRR changes HDR, local dimming, or input lag. A monitor can advertise FreeSync and still lack the HDMI VRR behavior needed by PS5.

How good is HDR on a PS5 monitor?

HDR quality depends on brightness, contrast, local dimming, OLED panel behavior, and tone mapping—not on the HDR badge alone. A DisplayHDR 400 monitor can accept HDR content while producing a much less convincing image than a bright mini-LED display or a high-contrast OLED.

The Sony INZONE M9 II lists DisplayHDR 600, full-array local dimming, and Auto HDR Tone Mapping in its official specification sheet. The ASUS VG28UQL1A lists DisplayHDR 400 and should be judged as a value 4K/120Hz monitor rather than a premium HDR display. In a bright room, a high-brightness IPS or mini-LED model may preserve visible highlights better; in a dark room, OLED’s black level can create the stronger overall contrast impression.

What screen size is best for a PS5 desk?

A 27- to 28-inch 4K monitor is the best general choice for a conventional desk distance because it combines high pixel density with a manageable footprint. A 32-inch monitor is more immersive and better suited to sitting farther away, but it usually costs more and takes up more desk space.

A 42-inch 4K TV deserves consideration when you sit several feet away, prioritize large HDR highlights and cinematic scale, or need integrated speakers. A monitor is usually the better choice for close desk gaming, PC-plus-console use, smaller rooms, and desktop ergonomics. A monitor is not automatically better than a TV.

How do you configure a PS5 for 4K/120Hz?

Use a direct connection and confirm the detected signal rather than assuming that the monitor is operating at its advertised maximum.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 input.
  2. Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  3. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on the PS5.
  4. Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
  5. Turn 120 Hz Output on.
  6. Turn VRR on.
  7. If the option is available and stable, enable Apply to Unsupported Games under VRR.
  8. Set HDR to On When Supported.
  9. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic initially.
  10. Open Information for the Connected HDMI Device and check the reported resolution, refresh rate, VRR, and HDR capabilities.
  11. Open the game’s graphics settings and select its performance or 120Hz mode when available.

Sony’s official setup guide documents these controls and the connected-device information screen.

Why is my PS5 stuck at 1080p/120Hz?

A PS5 that reports 1080p/120Hz is usually not receiving a usable 4K/120Hz path. Check the HDMI cable, the monitor’s correct HDMI 2.1 input, the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 or enhanced-bandwidth mode, and the PS5 Resolution setting.

  • Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor rather than through an AV receiver, capture card, HDMI switch, or soundbar.
  • Try the cable supplied with the PS5 or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Confirm that the monitor’s menu does not require HDMI 2.1 mode to be enabled.
  • Update the monitor firmware and PS5 system software.
  • Set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
  • Recheck Information for the Connected HDMI Device.

Sony recommends direct connection, a suitable HDMI 2.1 port and cable, updated firmware, and the correct resolution setting when troubleshooting 4K output.

What should you do if 4K/120Hz flickers or produces a blank screen?

Start with the cable, firmware, and direct connection, then temporarily reduce features to identify the unstable link. Replace the cable, update the monitor firmware, disable monitor overclocking, and turn VRR off temporarily. If the signal remains unstable, set PS5 Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 as a recovery measure.

Sony warns that Video Transfer Rate settings of -1 or -2 limit 4K/120Hz and some higher-quality 4K color modes. Treat those settings as troubleshooting options rather than the preferred permanent configuration. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance explains the resulting limitations.

Why is VRR unavailable on PS5?

VRR may be unavailable because the monitor supports VRR only through DisplayPort, advertises FreeSync without PS5 HDMI VRR compatibility, has VRR disabled in its menu, or is connected through an HDMI 2.0 input. The current resolution and refresh-rate combination may also fall outside the monitor’s VRR range.

Turn VRR on in both the monitor menu and PS5, connect directly to the correct HDMI 2.1 input, and test at the intended 4K/120Hz mode. Also check whether HDR, local dimming, or a compatibility mode disables VRR on the particular model.

Why does HDR look washed out, dim, or flat?

Confirm that HDR is enabled on both the PS5 and monitor, select the monitor’s HDR picture mode, and enable local dimming when the display requires it. A room that is too bright can expose raised OLED black levels, while a DisplayHDR 400 monitor may simply lack the brightness and contrast needed for impactful HDR. Some games also implement HDR poorly.

Check the game’s HDR calibration screen after the monitor is in its intended HDR mode. If the monitor has no local dimming and modest brightness, do not expect its HDR label to produce OLED- or mini-LED-class highlights.

Which cheaper PS5 monitors do not meet the full 4K brief?

Some cheaper models are good PS5 displays but should not be presented as equivalent to 4K/120Hz HDMI 2.1 monitors.

Model Native resolution What it can offer Why it is not a full match
PlayStation 27-inch Gaming Monitor QHD, 2560×1440 Two HDMI 2.1 inputs, VRR, HDR, speakers, and up to 120Hz on PS5 It is QHD, not 4K; see Sony’s official specification

Dell S2725QS 4K 4K/120Hz signals including VRR according to current comparison testing Weak HDR, no local dimming, and poorer motion handling than the leading choices

The current RTINGS comparison is the source for the reported behavior of the Dell and AOC alternatives. Choose the AOC when price and 1440p competitive gaming matter most; do not choose it if 4K/120Hz HDMI 2.1 is a firm requirement.

Should you buy a 4K monitor or a 4K TV for PS5?

Buy a monitor for a close desk setup, PC-plus-PS5 use, a smaller room, high pixel density, and desktop ergonomics. Buy a 4K TV when you sit several feet away, want a larger image, prioritize strong HDR and integrated audio, or mainly play from a couch.

A 27-inch OLED monitor can deliver superb contrast and low latency, but a large TV may provide a more immersive experience and better built-in sound. Compare the complete setup—including speakers, viewing distance, stand space, and HDMI 2.1 inputs—rather than assuming that the monitor category wins automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a PS5 use a 240Hz monitor?

Yes, a PS5 can connect to a 240Hz monitor, but PS5 output is capped at 120Hz. The additional 240Hz capability benefits a gaming PC connected to the same monitor rather than increasing PS5 refresh rate.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120Hz on PS5?

For a monitor intended to provide 4K/120Hz PS5 output, HDMI 2.1 or an equivalent high-bandwidth HDMI implementation is normally required. Confirm the actual supported 4K/120Hz signal, chroma, HDR, and HDMI VRR behavior instead of relying only on the HDMI 2.1 label.

Is a 1440p monitor good enough for PS5?

A 1440p monitor can be a good lower-cost PS5 choice for competitive gaming, but it does not provide the same pixel density or native 4K output as a 4K monitor. PS5 Pro and buyers specifically seeking 4K/120Hz should choose a verified 4K display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PS5 VRR work with every FreeSync monitor?

No. FreeSync support alone does not prove PS5 compatibility because PS5 uses HDMI VRR behavior. Verify that the monitor supports HDMI VRR at the intended resolution and refresh rate.

Is OLED safe for a PS5 gaming monitor?

OLED is suitable for PS5 gaming, but long-term image retention or burn-in is a usage-dependent risk, especially with repeated static elements. Check the manufacturer’s current regional warranty and panel-care policy before buying.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM for the best overall 4K/120Hz PS5 experience, the Sony INZONE M9 II for PlayStation-specific features, or the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A for clearly documented 4K/120Hz value. Verify the actual HDMI signal, HDMI VRR, HDR behavior, and current warranty—not just the monitor’s headline refresh rate.
