The best omnichannel retail POS depends on the retailer’s operating model: Shopify POS suits ecommerce-first brands, Square for Retail suits smaller businesses, Lightspeed suits inventory-intensive retailers, Clover suits payment- and hardware-led buyers, and NCR Voyix, Oracle Retail Xstore, and NewStore suit different enterprise and mobile-first requirements. No single platform is best for every retailer.
An omnichannel POS is more than a card terminal connected to an online store. A genuine omnichannel system connects products, prices, promotions, inventory, customer profiles, orders, returns, payments, fulfillment, and reporting across physical stores and digital channels. The seven platforms below are representative choices across small-business, midsize, enterprise, and mobile-first retail—not a single like-for-like ranking.
Pricing, payment availability, taxes, hardware, contracts, and supported features can differ by country. The pricing signals in this article refer to United States vendor pages and were observed around August 16, 2026; confirm current terms before signing a contract.

- Shopify POS is the natural shortlist choice when Shopify ecommerce is already the brand’s online system of record, but POS Pro is an additional $89 per month per location when billed yearly.
- Square for Retail offers a free plan for one location and a Plus plan listed at $89 per month per location, but processing, hardware, and add-on costs are separate.
- Lightspeed Retail is better suited to large catalogs, purchasing, vendors, and multi-location inventory than to retailers seeking a free, self-service POS.
- Clover combines retail software, payment processing, hardware, and an app marketplace, but reseller and acquiring-bank terms can materially change the merchant’s total cost.
- NCR Voyix and Oracle Retail Xstore are enterprise retail platforms, while NewStore focuses on cloud-native, mobile-first store operations; none should be compared directly with a small-business starter plan.
What makes an omnichannel retail POS genuinely omnichannel?
An omnichannel retail POS maintains connected operational data and customer experiences across stores, ecommerce, marketplaces, social selling, warehouses, and fulfillment channels. A retailer is multichannel when it sells through several channels. A retailer is omnichannel when those channels share enough data and processes that a customer can move between them without the business manually reconciling every transaction.

Unified commerce is a stronger architectural approach. Commerce, customer, inventory, order, payment, and promotion data are managed through connected systems with minimal duplication. A platform does not become omnichannel merely because an ecommerce connector sends online orders to a store register.
The minimum capability checklist
- Shared catalog: Products, variants, SKUs, barcodes, prices, images, taxes, and attributes should remain consistent across channels.
- Inventory synchronization: Stores, warehouses, ecommerce, and marketplaces should show usable stock with clearly documented timing, reservations, safety stock, and allocation rules.
- Unified customer records: Store and online purchases, returns, loyalty balances, gift cards, consent, and marketing preferences should connect to the right customer profile.
- Cross-channel orders: Staff should be able to find, modify, cancel, fulfill, and refund orders regardless of where the order started.
- Flexible fulfillment: Buy online, pick up in store, ship from store, split shipments, endless aisle ordering, and store-to-store fulfillment should be supported where the retailer needs them.
- Cross-channel returns: The system should handle an online order returned to a store, a store purchase returned by mail, partial refunds, exchanges, and refunds to the original tender.
- Consistent promotions: Member pricing, coupons, mix-and-match offers, exclusions, stacking rules, and promotional returns should behave predictably across channels.
- Mobile selling and clienteling: Employees should be able to look up products, customers, inventory, and orders and complete a sale away from a fixed counter.
- Connected reporting: Sales, refunds, discounts, taxes, payment fees, inventory, margins, and customer activity should be reconcilable across online and physical channels.
- Technical controls: APIs, webhooks, role-based permissions, audit trails, offline operation, and data-export tools matter as much as the visible checkout screen.
Ask vendors to demonstrate these workflows using the retailer’s own hardest scenarios. “Real-time inventory” might mean instant updates inside one platform, near-real-time updates through an integration, or batched marketplace synchronization. The mechanism and delay matter.
How do the seven POS platforms compare?
| Platform | Best for | Ecommerce approach | Inventory and scale profile | Payment flexibility | Public pricing signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify POS | Ecommerce-first brands opening stores | Native Shopify commerce ecosystem | Strong connected catalog and order foundation; advanced retail needs may require apps or POS Pro | Best experience with Shopify Payments; processor flexibility may be limited | Shopify plans from $39/month; POS Pro $89/month per location yearly | Total cost grows with plan, locations, apps, hardware, and processing |
| Square for Retail | Small and midsize retailers seeking simple setup | Connected Square online-store ecosystem | Good entry-level retail inventory and purchasing; less suitable for highly complex enterprise operations | Integrated Square payments; outside-processor choice is limited | Free for one location; Plus $89/month per location; Premium custom | Advanced features and add-ons are not included in the free plan |
| Lightspeed Retail | Inventory-intensive specialty and multi-location retail | Built-in ecommerce plus integrations | Deeper purchasing, vendor, catalog, and multi-location workflows | Confirm processor terms and payment rates in the quote | Public pricing page; dependable headline price not established in the dossier | More complexity and sales-assisted buying |
| Clover Retail | Hardware- and payments-led merchants | Connected ecosystem plus apps and integrations | Retail capabilities vary by configuration and apps | Processor and acquiring-bank relationship is central | Hardware bundles and plans displayed; reseller-dependent terms | Contract, processing, support, and cancellation terms can vary |
| NCR Voyix | Large, high-volume, and multinational retailers | Enterprise unified-commerce platform | Enterprise store operations, loyalty, analytics, inventory, and integrations | Enterprise proposal and integration dependent | Quote-based | Implementation and integration burden |
| Oracle Retail Xstore | Complex enterprise, specialty, luxury, and multi-country retail | Part of the Oracle Retail ecosystem | Deep store operations and enterprise merchandising integration | Enterprise proposal dependent | Quote-based | Requires technical resources and implementation partners |
| NewStore | Mobile-first, digitally native, fashion, luxury, and international brands | Cloud-native connected commerce approach | Mobile POS, clienteling, endless aisle, and modern store operations | Confirm supported payment architecture by country | Enterprise sales-led; no public list price identified | Not designed as a low-cost basic register |
Independent comparison coverage commonly groups Shopify, Square, Lightspeed, and Clover among mainstream retail POS options, while industry market research identifies NCR Voyix, Oracle, and NewStore among enterprise or mobile-first providers. Which retailers should choose Shopify POS?
Shopify POS is the strongest starting point for an ecommerce-first brand that wants its Shopify store, physical locations, catalog, orders, and customer activity in one commerce environment. Apparel, beauty, lifestyle, specialty, and direct-to-consumer brands can extend an established online operation into stores without choosing a completely separate retail platform.
Shopify’s core advantage is the ecommerce ecosystem. A retailer already using Shopify can connect in-person selling to its existing online products, orders, customers, and commerce workflows. Shopify also supports compatible mobile and countertop hardware and an extensive app ecosystem.
Shopify separates its basic POS capability from POS Pro. According to Shopify’s POS pricing page, Shopify commerce plans start at $39 per month in the United States, while POS Pro is listed at an additional $89 per month per location when billed yearly. The same page shows an example in-person rate of 2.6% plus $0.10, but actual rates depend on plan, country, and payment setup.
The headline subscription is not Shopify POS’s total cost. Budget for the underlying Shopify plan, POS Pro location fees where required, card processing, terminals or readers, apps, ecommerce themes, shipping, fulfillment services, and implementation work. Shopify POS is less attractive when a retailer needs highly specialized merchandising, wholesale, or inventory workflows out of the box, wants broad processor choice, or needs a POS that operates independently of Shopify’s wider commerce stack.

Is Square for Retail the best accessible POS for small retailers?
Square for Retail is a strong fit for a small or midsize retailer that values simple onboarding, integrated payments, a broad small-business ecosystem, and a low-cost entry point. A single-location shop with a straightforward catalog can start without the implementation project required by an enterprise suite.
Square connects retail checkout with online-store capabilities and supports compatible registers, terminals, readers, barcode equipment, receipts, and cash-drawer workflows. Square’s ecosystem can also extend into payroll, loyalty, marketing, and other small-business services.
According to Square’s retail POS page, Square lists a free plan for one location, a Plus plan at $89 per month per location, and a custom Premium plan. Square says the Plus tier includes advanced inventory tools, barcode labels, purchase orders, vendor management, and cost-of-goods-sold reporting.
The free plan should not be treated as equivalent to Square Plus. Payment processing, payroll, loyalty, marketing, hardware, online-store functions, and premium support can materially change the total bill. Square is a weaker fit when inventory, purchasing, tax entities, international operations, or enterprise allocation requirements are unusually complex, or when the retailer needs to use a processor outside Square.
When is Lightspeed Retail better than a basic tablet POS?
Lightspeed Retail is the better shortlist candidate when inventory, purchasing, vendors, product depth, and multi-location control matter more than the lowest monthly subscription. Specialty retailers with large catalogs and regular receiving, transfers, counts, and purchase orders should evaluate Lightspeed before choosing a simpler register-led system.
Rank #2
- iPad to POS in Minutes: Slide in an iPad and download the included Square point of sale app to get started. No training or service visits needed.
- Your entire business in one place: Power every part of what you do, all on one device. That’s payments, your website, daily reporting, and so much more.
- No extra readers required: Super fast built-in payments mean far fewer cords, zero fears of disconnecting, and a cleaner counter from here on out.
- Keep selling, even offline: Keep taking payments with offline payments even when your Wi-Fi or connectivity is down. Just reconnect to the internet within 24 hours to upload transactions. Terms and conditions apply.
- Stay powered even without power: if you need to unplug or if you lose power, Square Stand can run off a full iPad battery. iPad-powered mode only on USB-C compatible version.
Lightspeed highlights a cloud-based retail platform with built-in ecommerce, inventory management, mobile scanning, connected hardware, reporting, vendor management, and multi-location operations. The platform’s deeper retail workflows may justify a higher cost when they replace spreadsheets, manual purchase orders, disconnected inventory tools, or multiple integrations.
The Lightspeed Retail pricing page should be checked directly before purchase. The dossier does not establish a dependable current headline price or payment rate from the public page, so a retailer should request a quote covering locations, registers, ecommerce, payments, inventory, support, hardware, integrations, and implementation.
Lightspeed may be excessive for a small store with simple inventory that wants mostly self-service setup. The retailer should compare the value of better purchasing and inventory controls—not merely the monthly fee—against the staff time and errors that the platform may eliminate.
Who should consider Clover Retail?
Clover Retail suits merchants who prioritize payment hardware, countertop workflows, mobile terminals, and access to a broad app marketplace. Clover can be attractive when a retailer is already working with a bank, merchant-services provider, or Clover reseller and wants hardware and payments purchased as one package.
Clover’s strength is the combination of device options, integrated payments, retail software configurations, and third-party apps. The Clover retail pricing page displays multiple hardware bundles and software configurations, including Starter and Retail Growth arrangements.
Clover is not one uniform commercial offer. Hardware ownership, software fees, processing rates, contract duration, early termination terms, support, cancellation rights, and replacement policies can vary according to the acquiring bank or reseller. A device price or headline monthly fee is not enough. Request the complete written agreement, including payment rates for card-present and card-not-present transactions, payout terms, chargeback handling, offline limits, equipment obligations, and cancellation costs.
Clover is a poor fit for a retailer that needs processor independence, a deep native ecommerce experience, or advanced inventory and enterprise order orchestration without relying on additional apps. The Clover retail POS overview is useful for understanding the product family, but the merchant’s written proposal determines the actual commercial offer.
When does NCR Voyix make sense?
NCR Voyix makes sense for large, high-volume, multi-location, or multinational retailers that need enterprise store operations, centralized commerce management, loyalty, analytics, and integrations. NCR Voyix should be evaluated as an enterprise retail operating platform, not as a more expensive version of Square.
NCR Voyix describes its Voyix Commerce Platform as a unified commerce platform. The company has highlighted applications spanning POS, inventory, purchasing, loyalty, analytics, and AI-supported personalization in its investor announcement about the Voyix Commerce Platform. The company’s commerce platform information provides the appropriate enterprise context.
The right evaluation focuses on operating model and implementation readiness: store rollout, data migration, ERP and warehouse integration, loyalty identity, tax and payment architecture, reporting reconciliation, role design, training, support, and change management. Public pricing is generally not comparable with Shopify or Square’s posted plans.
NCR Voyix is a poor fit for one or two stores without an implementation team, a retailer needing transparent self-service pricing, or a project that cannot support formal integration and rollout work.

Why choose Oracle Retail Xstore for complex store operations?
Oracle Retail Xstore is designed for enterprise retailers that need deep store processes and alignment with Oracle’s retail, ERP, cloud, merchandising, and supply-chain ecosystem. Specialty, department, luxury, multi-brand, and multi-country retailers may consider Xstore when store operations must connect to broader enterprise systems.

- DUAL-SCREEN CHECKOUT: 15.6" capacitive touchscreen for the cashier plus a 13" customer-facing display that shows order details, the total due and your promotions for a faster, more transparent checkout.
- INTEL CORE i5 PERFORMANCE: Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD run POS, inventory and invoicing software smoothly, even during peak hours. Built-in Wi-Fi plus LAN for flexible, cable-free setup.
- WINDOWS 11 READY OUT OF THE BOX: Windows 11 comes pre-installed and ready to use, compatible with Windows-based POS software for retail, restaurants and services. POS software not included.
- CONNECT YOUR PERIPHERALS: 6x USB 2.0, COM/serial, VGA, LAN (RJ45), audio output and DC input for receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, speakers and external monitors.
- PREMIUM FANLESS ALUMINUM BUILD: Aluminum alloy base and screen back covers with silent fanless cooling that limits dust buildup; a sturdy stand keeps the screen steady during heavy touch use. 1-year manufacturer warranty.
Oracle positions Oracle Retail Xstore within store operations and presents a broader Oracle Retail portfolio. The relevant buying question is not whether Xstore has more features than a small-business POS. The question is whether the retailer needs complex promotions, store processes, inventory relationships, enterprise integration, local requirements, and a controlled rollout.
Exact modules, deployment choices, locations, users, integrations, professional services, and support terms should come from the retailer’s proposal. Oracle Retail Xstore is a poor fit for a first POS at a small business, a buyer seeking public monthly pricing, or an organization without internal technical resources and implementation partners.
Is NewStore the right mobile-first POS for a modern brand?
NewStore is best suited to digitally native, fashion, luxury, apparel, specialty, and international brands that prioritize mobile POS, clienteling, endless aisle, and cloud-native store operations. NewStore approaches the store as an extension of a connected digital brand rather than as an isolated fixed checkout lane.
Recommended Free Tools
Mobile POS can help associates sell from the sales floor, access customer and product information, locate inventory, place assisted online orders, and support clienteling. Endless aisle workflows can help a store sell an item that is unavailable at that location by ordering it for delivery or fulfillment elsewhere, provided inventory and order orchestration are properly configured.
NewStore’s point-of-sale product page and company site should be used to validate current modules, countries, integrations, and customer examples. NewStore’s positioning supports a mobile-first and cloud-native evaluation, but the available research does not establish that NewStore is objectively faster, cheaper, or easier than alternatives.
NewStore is a poor fit for a low-budget retailer needing a basic register, a business with extensive legacy compatibility requirements but no integration capacity, or a store model dependent on local functions not covered by the standard product. Public list pricing was not identified in the reviewed material, so expect a sales-led evaluation.
Which POS should each type of retailer shortlist?
| Retailer situation | Initial shortlist | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| One store with a simple catalog | Square for Retail | Accessible entry pricing, integrated payments, and straightforward setup | Confirm the cost of hardware, processing, online selling, and add-ons |
| Shopify ecommerce already drives the business | Shopify POS | Online and in-person commerce can share the Shopify ecosystem | POS Pro, apps, processing, and the underlying Shopify plan may be required |
| Large catalog with purchasing and transfers | Lightspeed Retail | Retail inventory, vendor, purchasing, and multi-location depth | Request a complete quote and test the retailer’s actual catalog |
| Bank- or processor-led hardware purchase | Clover Retail | Hardware and payment relationship are central to the offer | Compare the complete reseller agreement, not only the device price |
| Ten or more stores with complex centralized operations | NCR Voyix or Oracle Retail Xstore | Enterprise workflows, integration, loyalty, analytics, and rollout capability | Budget for implementation, migration, training, and change management |
| Fashion or luxury brand emphasizing associate selling | NewStore | Mobile POS, clienteling, endless aisle, and cloud-native store operations | Validate country coverage, integrations, payments, and implementation scope |
| Global enterprise rollout | Oracle Retail Xstore or NCR Voyix | Enterprise architecture and multi-system operating requirements | Selection depends on entities, currencies, taxes, ERP, loyalty, and local payments |
How should retailers compare omnichannel POS total cost?
Compare total cost of ownership rather than the advertised software subscription. A useful model is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Total cost of ownership = software subscriptions + payment processing + hardware + ecommerce subscription + add-ons and apps + integrations + implementation + data migration + training + support + contract or cancellation costs
For Shopify, include the underlying commerce plan, POS Pro location fees, processing, hardware, apps, themes, shipping, and fulfillment services. For Square, include processing, hardware, online-store features, payroll, loyalty, marketing, and premium support. For Clover, include the acquiring agreement, processing, hardware arrangement, software, apps, support, and cancellation terms. For Lightspeed and enterprise platforms, include quoted modules, payment terms, integration work, migration, professional services, and rollout support.
Use at least three modeled transaction profiles before choosing:
- Small store: $25,000 per month in card-present sales, one location, and one register.
- Growing retailer: $100,000 per month in combined online and store sales across two to five locations.
- Enterprise retailer: Multiple countries, dozens or hundreds of locations, and complex ERP and loyalty integration.
These are decision-model scenarios, not claims about typical retailers or vendor performance. Payment costs vary with card mix, average ticket, keyed and card-not-present volume, negotiated rates, refunds, chargebacks, transaction volume, country, processor, and contract.

What omnichannel POS failure modes deserve special attention?
Inventory overselling
Inventory can oversell when POS, ecommerce, marketplaces, and warehouses update at different speeds. Ask about synchronization intervals, stock reservations, safety-stock buffers, marketplace allocation, partial fulfillment, backorders, and the behavior when two channels sell the last unit simultaneously.

Split orders and partial fulfillment
Test orders containing multiple locations, multiple shipments, store pickup plus shipping, substitutions, partial cancellations, partial refunds, and customer changes after fulfillment begins. A system that handles a simple one-location order may still fail the retailer’s actual operating model.
Promotions that diverge by channel
Verify buy-one-get-one offers, mix-and-match discounts, member pricing, coupon exclusions, channel-specific promotions, stacking rules, local price overrides, time-zone scheduling, and returns after a promotion. A shared product catalog does not guarantee shared promotion logic.
Multiple legal entities and countries
Growing retailers may need separate tax registrations, currencies, payment accounts, accounting ledgers, inventory ownership, brands, storefronts, and customer-consent policies. A platform suitable for five stores in one state may not support a multinational structure without additional systems or regional products.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Migration and peak-period risk
Migration can involve SKUs, variants, historical orders, customer profiles, gift cards, loyalty balances, vendors, purchase orders, taxes, product images, barcode formats, and returns history. Ask vendors about holiday traffic, register downtime, API limits, ecommerce and payment outages, support response times, incident communication, disaster recovery, recovery-point objectives, and recovery-time objectives. Do not describe a platform as reliable without attributed uptime data, incident history, or a documented service commitment.
Reporting mismatches
Online and in-store reports may define gross sales, net sales, refunds, discounts, tax, shipping, gift-card liability, cost of goods sold, payment fees, and marketplace commissions differently. Request a reconciliation demonstration using the retailer’s accounting workflow before accepting a claim of unified reporting.
What is the final decision framework?
Choose the platform that matches the retailer’s dominant operational constraint, not the platform with the longest feature list.
- Choose Shopify POS when ecommerce is central and Shopify already owns the catalog, checkout, and customer-acquisition workflow.
- Choose Square for Retail when simplicity, accessible entry pricing, integrated payments, and a small-business ecosystem dominate the decision.
- Choose Lightspeed Retail when purchasing, vendor management, large catalogs, inventory control, and multi-location workflows dominate.
- Choose Clover Retail when hardware and the merchant’s payment-provider relationship are more important than processor independence or deep native ecommerce.
- Choose NCR Voyix when a large retailer needs enterprise store operations, centralized commerce, loyalty, analytics, and integration at scale.
- Choose Oracle Retail Xstore when complex store operations must align with Oracle Retail, ERP, merchandising, and global enterprise systems.
- Choose NewStore when a digitally native or international brand prioritizes mobile POS, clienteling, endless aisle, and cloud-native store operations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best omnichannel retail POS?
There is no universal best omnichannel retail POS. Shopify POS is the strongest fit for ecommerce-first brands, Square for Retail for smaller retailers, Lightspeed for inventory-intensive businesses, Clover for payment- and hardware-led merchants, and NCR Voyix, Oracle Retail Xstore, or NewStore for different enterprise and mobile-first requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a POS connected to an online store automatically omnichannel?
No. An online-store integration alone does not prove omnichannel capability. The POS should connect products, prices, promotions, inventory, customer profiles, orders, fulfillment, returns, gift cards, loyalty, and reporting across the channels the retailer actually uses.
How much does an omnichannel POS cost?
The cost includes software, payment processing, hardware, ecommerce, apps, integrations, implementation, migration, training, support, and contract costs. In the United States, Shopify lists plans from $39 per month plus POS Pro at $89 per month per location when billed yearly, while Square lists a free one-location plan and Plus at $89 per month per location; these are not complete total-cost figures.
Which POS is best for a retailer with complex inventory?
Lightspeed Retail is the most natural initial shortlist among these seven for inventory-intensive specialty retail because its positioning emphasizes purchasing, vendors, inventory, reporting, and multi-location operations. Enterprise retailers should also evaluate NCR Voyix or Oracle Retail Xstore when inventory is tied to broader merchandising, ERP, and supply-chain systems.
What should retailers verify about offline POS operation?
Retailers should verify which registers, tender types, customer and order records, and inventory functions continue during an outage; whether offline transactions require preconfiguration; how duplicate transactions are prevented; and how delayed sales synchronize when the connection returns.
The Bottom Line
The right omnichannel POS is the one that preserves operational continuity across the channels a retailer actually runs. Start with the retailer’s ecommerce foundation, inventory complexity, location count, payment requirements, fulfillment model, customer-data needs, and implementation capacity. Then require a live demonstration of cross-channel inventory, orders, returns, promotions, offline selling, and reporting before comparing prices.
